What is the difference between Student Tabla set (PDI-IB) and regular table drum set (PDI-EA)? Are there differences in dimensions or quality as well?

I bought the student drum set and I think the difference is that with the student drum set you can't tune the bigger drum but can still tune the smaller one. There could be more differences, but I never used the regular one. If you are an ameture tabla player planning to learn playing, I suggest you go with the student one. At the biggner level I do not think it makes a difference.

can I buy for my 12 year old?

If your child is as interested drums this will be great. Ours is very well made. Each drum has it's own Rich tones. My son, who was in high school when he first got it, enjoyed learning the different techniques to properly play it. You tube has several great videos for this. My son has enjoyed collecting and playing drums from all over the world. This has been a great addition.
