Good figure, but not perfect.
The media could not be loaded. 2022-23 Mattel Jurassic World Dino Trackers “Track ‘N Attack” IndoraptorWhile Mattel already produced two Indoraptors in the past, this is the first new sculpt of the hybrid we have received since 2018. While the previous figures were both excellent in their own right, they both came up short with their head sculpts. This latest release for the new Dino Trackers line remedies that one aspect, but falls short in other ways. The sculpt is incredible on this figure, and captures the look of the Indoraptor nearly perfectly. The head is the most screen accurate sculpt of the three indoraptor figures, and is one of the most screen accurate sculpts Mattel has produced for the main toy line. It is that good! The scalation is pretty much identical to the older figures. However, the scales do not seem to pop quite as much on this Dino Tracker version. Not only on the head, but across the entire figure. I think it is due to the type of plastic that was used, but more on that later. The teeth are a massive improvement over the previous figures. The older Indoraptors had blunted teeth that were prone to paint rubbing off. This new Dino Trackers version utilizes a feature seen in the more recent T. rex figures. The teeth are molded separately, and inserted into the mouth. This gives the teeth a much more natural look. It allows them to appear sharper, and much more intimidating. The interior of the mouth is vastly improved as well. The older Indoraptors only had painted tongues, but this one has the entire mouth colored nicely. The only negative is the hinge in the back of the mouth which remains black. The quills on the back of the head look much better on this one. They are a bit longer, thinner, and there are more quills overall. The neck is a bit of a weak area. The detail on the back and sides of the neck look great. I love the large plated scales down the back, and the bulging veins on the sides. However, the underside of the throat has a severe lack of texturing. As a matter of fact, the entire underside of the figure is very poorly textured. The only exceptions are the bottom jaw, and the bottom of the tail. The scalation across the body looks much better than on the neck, but the scales still don’t stand out as much as they could. The larger plate scales down the spine, as well as the rows of osteoderms along the back, are all sculpted exceptionally well. The quills along the back are, once again, longer, thinner, and more abundant than on the older figures. As previously mentioned, the belly is the weakest area. It is just too smooth, and lacking in detail. The tail is beautifully sculpted all around. Unlike the neck and body, the scale details are just as strong on the bottom as on the top. I really like the snake-like scales along the bottom too. The tip of the tail is molded in a separate material, and is very flexible. I assume this was done to both prevent breakage, as well as making it safer in case of accidental eye pokes. I do wish the tail were a bit longer, because it feels a bit too short. The limbs are long, and well muscled. The hands are quite a bit larger and more intimidating on this new version. This is due to them playing a large role in the action features. The feet on this one are very oversized. The previous figures were as well, but this one also has much thicker ankles to match. On the plus side, the figure has much better balance than either of the older figures.Colorations are pretty straightforward, as it should be. The signature stripe along the sides looks great, and is the best of the three versions. The plastic used for the figure is very glossy. (Even more so than either of the previous releases.) The gloss looks nice, but takes away from the sculpted details.Articulations are, unfortunately, extremely limited. The tail can be moved up, down, and side to side. It can also rotate. The legs move forward and back, and had rotation at the feet. That is the full extent of the articulations. Everything else is tied to the action features. The actions are fun, but could have been much better. A button on the back causes the Indoraptor to open its jaws and roar. Lifting the arms causes the head to turn, the mouth to open, and the animal to roar. Lifting the right arm causes the head to turn left, and the left arm does the opposite. Letting the arm go makes it snap back into place for a slashing motion. I feel the slashing would have been much improved if it had used a button for activation. The eyes glow a burning red with each action as well. The figure also comes with a small piece of “tracking gear” in the form of a head set. The piece is nicely detailed in its own right, and fits on the Indoraptor perfectly. (It will also work on the older figures, but does not fit quite as snugly as their heads are pretty different.) one of the coolest details is the fact that you can see the lighted eye through the side of the head gear.Overall, this is a decent release. This is another great Indoraptor figure with some major sculptural improvements over the previous releases. However, some downgrades unfortunately detract from those improvements a bit. Still, I have no problem recommending this figure, especially if you missed out on the “Grab ‘N Growl” version. My one wish is that Mattel takes the improvements of this new release, combines them with the articulations of the older figures, and gives us an Indoraptor for Hammond Collection in the near future.
