Basic words
Of the several Russian courses I purchased, I remembered the most words from this book which is why I bought it a second time. I've been to Russia 12 times and married a Russian, now that I'm retired with more time, I'm reviewing what I learned.

Perfect Prep for Russian Travel!
My husband and I each used a Learn Russian in Ten Minutes A Day workbook for just a month before a trip to Russia and it doubled our enjoyment of our trip!It gave us the ability to read Russian well enough that my husband and I could depart from our escorted river tour, and take a public bus (the right one!), transfer to the Metro, get on and off at the right stations......so that in addition to the half-day tour of the Hermitage offered by our tour, we were able to take off on our own to spend an additional 2 days at the museum and see wonderful things that the average Russian tourist has no time for.On tours through Moscow, St.Petersburg, etc. we could read the billboards, protest posters, storefront signs, and all those little things that give human insight in addition to what you are hearing from the official tour guide. The book is well designed to accomodate adult learning principles. I could not believe how well these simple and often entertaining exercises worked! Yes, I did use the stickers on my stuff; they were a great vocabulary aid. Yes, I did use the flash cards and other included tools and references. Learning is supposed to be fun, folks....and this was!

Good supplemental study tool.
For anyone who wants to begin learning Russian, I wouldn't recommend relying on this book exclusively - you've got to have some language tapes or other means of aural study - but it makes for a nice compliment to more traditional texts. Of course, the "10 minutes a day" concept is silly. However, when study time comes around,I find myself turning to this book more than any other, especially when I only have a little time to study or when I've had a particularly draining day and don't feel up to more serious endeavors. The stickers are great, and I've found the pronunciations to be pretty accurate. It is a definite flaw that they don't show you the stressed vowels, but the individual pronunciations do account for the differences between stressed and unstressed vowels. On its own, this book isn't going to teach you Russian, but it is a fun and accessible supplemental study tool.

Excellent Starter Program for Russian
I was a Russian linguist for the military many moons ago. My son showed an interest in the language, and he signed up for a non-credit course at the local community college. This book is used as a text for the course. When it arrived, I looked it over and was highly impressed with all of its features: from flashcards to the software on disk, I could not imagine a more complete program for beginning Russian. Here comes the "if only": if only I had such a tool and guide to conversational Russian when I was learning the language, I could have done so much more at the outset. Excellent product. You get more than your money's worth.

Great Amazon Seller
I received this much sooner than the promised time. I had borrowed this book before from my local library, but of course could not use it to its full extent. It has stickers and tear out flash cards that are great. I highly recommend this book if you are trying to learn a foreign language. You will need other sources besides this, but it is an additional valuable aid.

Great Starter Book for Learning Russian
Fantastic, but it'll take you much longer to memorize the letters of the Russian Cyrillic alphabet, and a lot more than that to learn how to write them legibly, but if you keep at it for a minimum of 10 minutes a day you'll certainly be able to read the Russian words. Then you need to learn what they mean...

Great for beginners!
Great book for beginning vocabulary memorization. This book helped me get some of the basics of Russian down before moving to Russia to work for a year. I liked the methodology of this book. The included flash cards are very helpful. Definitely recommend for beginners!

Review
Great book - I love these series of books. The CD is a great idea and the book is very good as well. what I like about the book and CD is that they help you to pronounce the words. The book was brand new and delivered within the week. Very Happy !!!

There are better books for beginners
This book is frankly poor. The emphasis is on vocabulary, although it does throw in a few set phrases for you to use. However, this book is not going to enable you to actually SPEAK Russian or understand anything of any real merit. Yes, I realise it is for complete beginners, but Take Off in Russian is also aimed at the beginner market and can do a lot more for you than this. If you want short lessons, then Take Off provides this (although they are more like half an hour than 10 minutes - but then what can you really learn in 10 minutes?). Take Off also provides you with the tools to produce language on your own, rather than relying on the few set phrases you might have found in a book like 10 minutes.Another criticism of 10 minutes is the pronunciation guide. It's way off the mark. There are no stress markers, which are found in all other Russian books I have come across, and as stress is very important in Russian pronunciation, it's important for even beginners to learn it correctly. The romanised guides are also bizzare at times, and sound nothing like the word should sound.I do quite like the stickers section (although having a sticker for words like 'dog' and 'cat' seems a bit pointless, because 1) I don't have a dog/cat to stick it on 2) I wouldn't stick it on my dog/cat if I did), and the crosswords are quite good for vocab revision, although there are only 2 or 3 of them. The menu translator is the best thing in here - ideal for trips to restaurants and good to stick on your fridge to help you learn the words while you're in the kitchen - and the flashcards are a good idea, although I didn't really take to them. For these good points, I'd give it 3 stars, but because of the pronunciation issues, I'm reducing it to 2. Buy Take Off in Russian instead. It's a little pricier, but if you want to actually learn Russian, you should be prepared to fork out a couple of quid more.
