Does this dish keep the butter from getting stale?

Butter can go stale or sour if left out 14 days or more with out refrigeration . But being covered will extend shelf life, Having had home made butter on the farm and only a Ice box days, we kept it in the spring house for weeks and no problem, always soft and tasty. But My advice if you are not going to be using it up with in several weeks then i would put it in fridge,

Is the lid a little heavy for an elderly person to lift?

The lid is heavy. If someone has arthritis the little handle is hard to grab. Even without that, I don't trust myself to use the handle, I grab the lid itself. I like the dish though.
