Description

  • One of the easiest orchids on earth! Hardy, tough, vigorous, and forgiving.
  • Excellent beginners orchid -- confidence-building! Compact size lets you grow it anywhere, or even hanging on a wood or cork bark mount.
  • Each flower spike produces 3 - 10 fragrant flowers. Blooms in late winter/early spring.
  • A LOT of fun to grow -- larger plants readily produce new shoots and "keikis" (single-cane aerial propagations)
  • Please look at ALL pictures to get an idea of sizes offered. Medium and Mature sizes may have older, leafless canes, but will have newer canes as well. Please note that plants bloom in late winter/early spring.

Australian Dendrobium orchids are the toughest, hardiest, strongest orchids on the planet – and they’re also the easiest of orchids to grow! This Aussie Dendrobium hybrid is derived from the naturally occuring species, Dendrobium kingianum, the Easiest Orchid on Earth (also available from Orchid Insanity on ). Like everything else in Australia, these orchids are tough and can handle almost any reasonable growing conditions, from freezing temps in the low 30s F through temps up into the 100s F. They’ll thrive in bright light (although avoid direct sun for prolonged periods), and will grow nicely in shady conditions as well. During the winter, they prefer a cold (into the 40s F or even lower) and dry period (i.e., restrict water or only mist if you must from November 1 until around mid-January, when you’ll likely see new flower buds form!) When the flowers bloom, they produce a floral fragrance that packs a pleasing punch. Offered here are three sizes, from a “keiki” (a single-cane aerial shoot/propagation), a medium size plant, or a mature plant (please see accompanying pics). The mature-size plant is capable of blooming during the next blooming season (late winter/early spring), and the medium size plant is quite likely to bloom, too. Please note that both the mature and medium size plants may have a leafless cane or two, as older canes do eventually drop their leaves. Not to worry – these leafless canes act as energy storage for the plant, and will continue to drive new growth! You can grow these orchids on practically any kind of growing media, including bark, gravel, rocks, mounted on wood or bark, or even no media at all (if you water frequently). This is a great confidence-building orchid, as they are very forgiving and can handle a great deal of neglect (although that’s not recommended!). This hybrid produces larger flowers, larger canes, and thicker leaves than its parent species and is every bit as fun to grow!

Not so easy or forgiving

I thought I was taking acceptable care of it (and I've been getting plenty of practice with phalaenopsis orchids), but mine died and I threw away the remains. It arrived okay, but then instead of growing it just sort of self-destructed and leaf-by-leaf it all turned yellowy-brown. I was sort of prepared for it in case the care wasn't really as easy as it was supposed to be, but it was still disappointing to watch. Its spot on the windowsill will be probably be filled with a different type of orchid soon enough.

No roots

I knew I was getting a tiny keiki and I suppose they even say in the description that they may not have roots when shipped, but keikis shouldn't even be removed from the mother plant until they have a few small roots. The survival of this is probably a 50/50 chance.

Nice little dendrobiums.

Beautiful little babies in spag. moss in small plastic pots. They were actually larger than I thought they would be, well packaged, with no shipping damage. VERY happy with my purchase.

Watch for slugs

Orchid arrived on time and in seemingly good condition. Once I repotted it I found slugs in the medium. The moss was also tightly compacted in the root system making it a bit difficult to remove. The slugs did a number on one of the canes and half the root system, but I'm hoping it pulls through.

Healthy and packed well.

Love the plant. Arrived safely and in good shape. It adjusted quickly to semi hydro, so hoping we will get flowers next year.
