Ellie Bean the Drama Queen

Good if you are getting SPD treatment/medical care
Good book, but buyer should know that this book discusses going to a doctor regarding SPD. So, if you aren't taking your kid to a doctor for SPD then your kid might be confused by the book. (example: why don't I see a doctor) The book also explains the types of therapies that may benefit a child with SPD. So again, unless you are actually getting treatment for your child this book might confuse smaller children. If you are having a child see a doctor for SPD, then this would be ane excellent book to read to them so they know what to expect, etc. This could also be a good book to for their siblings/classmates so they can understand what the child with SPD is going through and what treatments may help.

Liked it, Loved it, want more like it!
I'm a mother to 5 wonderful children the youngest two are also purely "sensational". I picked up this book hoping it would be beneficial for our family. I like how easy it is to read and follow. I absolutely love how it relates to my daughter, Becca. She enjoys looking through books and finding familiar things. She was able to relate to Ellie's "Miss Gail" because she has her own "Miss Stephanie". Ellie is helped by a special swing, mini-trampoline, and even a small brush for tactile stimulation. It was really nice to see her light up and make these comparisons herself! Now if only I could get some members of our family to read it and be enlightened to Sensory Integration issues.

Cute illustrations, needs some re-writing
My kids and I like the illustrations, and the storyline does pretty well at explaining one child's experience with SPD and learning to handle it thru working with an occupational therapist. (In this case excessive spinning, sensitivity to touch, screaming and crying sessions, etc.) The OT part is explained well for a young child, but the beginning needs some re-writing to improve flow and understanding. I generally change the words as I read it to my children. (For example, when talking about her spinning it uses the term "multiple rotations", which is not age-appropriate for a book geared toward young children.)It does help children learn to label their experiences. The girl tends to just cry and scream, leaving her mother to wonder what the problem is. Later in the book, she starts to use her words to describe what the problem is. I don't have the book on hand now, but there's an illustration showing her saying things like, "too scratchy!", "too hot!", etc. That really helped my three-year-old start labeling his own negative experiences, which helped us know how to change things for him. (This inclusion added a 4th star to my opinion of the book.)

Is Jennie Harding spying on us?
My daughter, also named Ellie, also nicknamed Ellie Bean, also has SPD. Sooooo, I had to buy this book. It is a bit wordy for young children, but it was really helpful for my child's kindergarten teacher and classmates to help them understand her diagnosis of SPD, and the challenges she must face. It is so easy to assume that she's being dramatic, but sometimes she doesn't even understand WHY she feels overwhelmed and anxious. This book really helped all of us.

Understanding Drama Queens
This book has fit all the "pegs" that I needed to understand my children and their sensory issues. The information and resources in the back of the book were super helpful and made things easier for me and my husband in knowing how to relate to our children with SPD. THIS IS A MUST HAVE book for any family that has SPD children or adults as well

Ellie Bean the Drama Queen
Such an amazing book. We have shared it with my child's teacher who has read it to the classroom. It is written on level that even smaller kiddos can understnd yet would also be very appropriate for older elementary kiddos. This was an easy way to start a conversation in the classroom about why my child behaves the way he does. Thanks to the author for kick starting what could be a difficult topic.

Great Reference for Kids with SPD
I bought this book for my daughter who has Sensory Processing Disorder. She is older than Ellie is in the story, but was able to relate to her experiences. It helped us to put into words how far she has come and how she can now talk about what is bothering her, just like Ellie. It helped her to know that she wasn't the only one who has SPD.I think it would also be helpful for kids who don't have SPD to understand why other kids act differently. The pictures are great and it's easy to see how Ellie is feeling from her expressions.

love it
A wonderfully straight forward explanation of sensory processing disorder that is aimed at children and definitely hits the mark, an innocent approach to an important subject.

I liked how the book described SPD
I liked how the book described SPD, but I quite didn't like the face there was no one else in the book to help Ellie but only, her mother and the OT.It is a good book but my SPDer boy didn't like it much. Can be given to those people who give judgmental looks to SPD kids, they may read and understand that SPD isn't a pretend thing, it's rather something real which is difficult to deal with.
