How do you get it to spray water? pumped and pumped but cannot get water

My son just received this as a birthday gift. It didn't work. After some troubleshooting, the lever that opens and closes the valve to release the water is broken. The valve post turns really hard, and I think that is breaking the plastic lever. (It split the rounded portion of the lever that mates to the valve post.) If I take the lever off and turn the valve with pliers, everything works. I haven't found anyone selling replacement levers yet. I tried gluing it back together, but it broke again. Time to see if I can make a new lever out of something stronger.........
