Though I wouldn't use the board in the rain, how would the paint hold up if in contact withwater (some rain drops)?

I d at any direct water would want the boards, however if you seal it before painting then sealed with enamel you should be fine. I hope that helps. Be careful of what types of paint you use, I.e. spray paint, water-based, that will have most of your concern with water damage.

will these still work with fabric on them to make prettier?

Thank you for your inquiry. They should remain rigid if you glue fabric to the boards. Please test a small area first to confirm the glue will not damage the board.
