Q: Does the filter ever need to be replaced?

I have one that is about two years old and is starting to deteriorate, so I will be replacing it. Once a week I take them off and squeeze them in water to clean them out. Unless you have unusually high chlorine in your water than tap water is fine and won’t kill the beneficial bacteria in the 60 seconds or so that you have the sponge in tap water.

Q: would these fit the aqueon quiet flows 30 and or 50 intakes?

Yes, I just installed these on my aqueon 50 and it fits perfectly. However, that is the max size filter the sponge will fit. I also have it installed on a aqueon 75 and it just isn't tall enough to cover the intake completely. To get around this I just cut a small piece off of another sponge and placed it on the remaining area.

Q: Will these work on a cascade 700 canister filter?

They clog easily, not course enough. I had them on my cascade 1500 and the sponge clogged causing the filter to blow a seal and then flood.
