You can do whatever you feel works for you really. I have. And have learned a few times starting with electrical tape (failed with the slightest pull and disconnected). Then crimp connectors (no good due to either over crimping or under crimping). Then heat shrink tubing with solder rings in the tube (works but when fails. It reduces the wire length cutting off connector if needed. Time and money involved. Best way is cordless solder gun. Solder the wires and slide tubing over and heat shrink. To make it secure and moisture proof. Condensation has a way of forming in the oddest places.

I don't have a heat gun. Do these need a heat gun to be effective?

They work just fine if not shrunk down to the wire. You can can use a flame but is a little difficult. Just get a cheap heat gun, , much easier and better.

will a hair dryer work as a heat source for shrinking the plastic sleeve?

I have not tried a hair dryer. Keep in mind that it requires a hot air to melt and shrink the connectors. I don’t think a hairdryer will not be hot enough to seal the connectors.

Would these work with electric sidewalk lighting?

I would say yes. I used them on a boat motor.

Very nice at a low price!

These work well and seem to be very good quality - especially for the low price! I didn't think that I needed such a large number and assortment, but I find myself using them often and they work great. A cheap heat gun works really well to shrink the tubing after you crimp them and they are really secure and water tight! I wish I had these long ago, it would have made a lot of projects faster and easier!

Superb adhesion and crimp hold.

I used these for aux lighting circuits on 5 different offroad motorcycles. Excellent product adheres so well i believe they will last a lifetime. I heat shrunk it to the tip of a fork for testing purposes and could not yank it off fork with all my arm streingth. Plus once cold it hardens like a tough plastic and glass smooth.

Great connection and sealing

The connection is tight and they seal tight to the wire. They will provide you a water tight seal with minimal heat. Great for boat and trailer wiring exposed to the weather.

Amazing Set

This set of butt connectors is my husband's new favorite. My husband is an all around handy man he can fix just about anything and he's always working on something. He goes through a lot of butt connectors and we have used many different brands but I came across this set and decided to give them a try! My husband was so excited to try them out and he said these are really great quality and he loved that they came with several different sizes, even a smaller size he said he's never seen in a set of these before! Needless to say he was so thankful for this set and I will definitely be buying these for him again!Edit: My husband just used these yesterday to fix an ATV for a friend and he said they worked so well and he had no issues. He said he will definitely be sticking to these wire connectors because he uses them A LOT!
