Where is it manufactured?

The manufacturer stated these blankets are made in India. I purchased this blanket for a friend who lives atop a mesa outside Santa Fe. She told me the blanket keeps her warm and is soft to touch, not rough or "itchy" like some blankets.

Has anyone machine washed this? I know it's dry clean only but is that really necessary?

It's possible to home wash wool with good results. You have to know what you are doing and you can't do it in a water machine except for a spin only cycle which is useful to extract water. Use cold water to avoid shrinkage, use a large basin such as a bathtub with a lot of cold water in it, and do not agitate or rub the blanket too much to avoid felting. Do not wring. Rinse thoroughly in multiple changes of water, gently moving the blanket through the water to thoroughly remove soap. If you have a washer with a spin only cycle you could use that to extract most of the water because the spin only won't felt the fabric (the wool gets felted by agitation and wet fibers interlocking with one another when wet. The agitation causes more fibers to contact one another and interlock) Then Dry flat on a hammock made by suspending a bedsheet taut horizontally between four posts. This avoids additional shrinkage and distortion of shape. You should get good results doing it this way and the blanket will still look good and won't shrink or distort size appreciably. This is all about understanding the properties of wool and how it responds to heat, water, and mechanical force when wet.

Do you treat the blanket with anything? I read you do not treat with fire retardent, i hope this is true. What about preservative powders?

I own 3 of these blankets. Wool is NATURALLY fire retardant. That's one of the reasons that campers and hikers rely on them. You know, sleeping near a camp fire. All fabrics can ignite but wool has a very low flame velocity. It is not treated to be flame resistant. The natural odor of lanolin (naturally occurring oils in wool) can be pungent at first but will wear off with use .... hope this helps!
