Does the base stand on its own stable on wood floor? or does it need securing?

I have my stand on a deep pile carpet and it’s very stable not sure this would be the same on a wood floor.

Yeah, generally speaking, that shouldn't be an issue. But if you have the item raised to it's top height setting and the TV is on uneven flooring, then it might be top heavy and lean a bit too much. If this happens adjust the mounting points on the vertical rails you attach to your telly as this might help lower the weight distribution to a better point.
