Appears to be a cap with hole in it where i put the cv axle end in. does this cap just pop off to get the old seal out ?

You need to pry the old seal out with a seal puller. There is no "cap" the whole thing is the seal including the metal ring. Use a piece of pipe the same diameter as the outer ring of the seal to tap it in place.

dose this work on the driver side??

2001 pontiac grand prix. Driver side seal is different the the passenger side. Passenger side will not work with drivers side.

Our documentation shows that we used it in our fleet as "Seal Axle Left" indicating driver's side usage/fitment.

Is this the seal which goes on the end of the axle, or the transmission seal? I'm looking for the seal protector, for the axle to hub seal.

This is the transmission to CV axle seal pressed into the transmission. The CV outer joint is splined into the bearing hub with no seal.
