GOLDENAcryl Med 8oz Gac-100 Acrylic

GAC-100 is one of Golden Acrylic Color's range of specialist polymer mediums. It is not too expensive and a bottle will last you an absolute age! GAC-100 is the most physically flexible in the range and is in Golden's words a "universal acrylic polymer". You can blend this into acrylic paints from any company - be they high-end professional acrylic paints with heavy bodies, light bodies or fluid bodies, or into student brands or basics brands or even crafting acrylics - once thinned down they dry slower and blend more easily on the page or cloth. You can mix a lot of paint into a little GAC-100 to thin the paint down without losing the ability to stick to the substrate, or you can mix a little paint into a lot of GAC-100 to make a fluid paint suitable for all paint-pouring techniques (clean pour, dirty pour and so on). You can use GAC-100 on its own to prime a canvas or board to reduce discolouration of your paints - you can then apply gesso over it or under it. Whilst it isn't the _best_ of the GAC range for paint pouring (GAC-800 is), or the best for every job, GAC-100 is the most _useful_ in that one bottle will allow you to do a lot of different jobs and techniques - this is particularly useful if you're just starting out with acrylics and don't want to spend a fortune on loads of different fluid mediums - GAC-100 is a really good starting point (I tell all beginners to acrylics to buy a good impasto gel, a good white gesso and a bottle of GAC-100, as it's kind of like those "two in one" shampoos - why buy 7 bottles when you can buy 1?).On the whole, it does the job, and it has help me not need to buy fluid acrylics for art journalling and mixed media as I can soften my heavy-body professional artist grade acrylics with GAC-100 and make my own fluid acrylics that blend beautifully and dry without adding gloss to the paint. The surface is then easy to coat with a clear gesso for example then add more layers of paints or dyes, or you can work right on top of it - it does still resist dyes just as a normal acrylic paint would, and it's not going to give you the tooth-y feel of those crafting acrylics that are very fluid and which you can use dye sprays on top of (which contain a fair amount of gesso-like chalk, mica etc so that they have a tooth-y surface) - GAC-100 won't give you that as it can't turn an acrylic paint into a tooth-y fluid gesso-acrylic hybrid which is what some of those crafting paints really are. So, if you just want to thin down and blend, this IS the right product for you. If you want to do paint pouring, likewise, if you want to pre-coat your canvas or whatever, it's also the product for you.Golden's website has a lot of helpful information on using GAC-100 well and I strongly recommend everyone reads it before buying and before use - it really saves you a lot of trial and error!

This is a must have for me. I frequently paint on unprepared boards, and they need sealing before applying gesso to stop colour from the board seeping through. And a little goes a long way.
