Can the bottles be recycled?

It says it is plastic #1 which is PET. It can be recycled into things like polyester and plastic carpet material but it is not very cost effective to do so. It is my understanding from working in the beverage industry for many years that most PET that goes to recyclers ends up either in the ocean or in landfills.
