Q: What use are the 5 wires without the brush heads?

Those for the tight areas where you can not get a brush into to scrap off any built up paint. I use them to ensure that my brush does not get clogged with a build up of old paint. They actually come in handy.

Q: How do you use the needle, it seems too big, also what are the wires for?

Needle is used to pick out dried paint from the nozzle etc. Use of the wire brushes to clean out the body and paint cup if needed.

Q: are they solvent resistant?

Mine has held up to pretty much everything thrown at it so far. Enamel thinners,Windex, Acetone..I will wash em off with soapy water after use though.
