A beautiful story that will play over and over in your head
This is one of those movies that will keep you thinking long after you have seen it. We follow a young man, Takatoshi who randomly falls in love with a girl, Emi on a train. Smitten, we see him awkwardly progress through the relationship, witnessing each private moment when the relationship moves to the next level. On the one hand it feels like a roller coaster - almost too fast. And then the viewer comes to realize that it's not fast enough.Major spoilers: Emi and Takatoshi are two ships passing each other in the night, travelling from opposite ends of the time stream. Emi's future is Takatoshi's past - as Emi ages, she encounters Takatoshi's past and vice versa. For a short period every five years, they align and can spend the day together, but then the next day starts with each experiencing the other's previous day. We are taken through the movie from Takatoshi's view as he comes to realize that the Emi he is learning about already knows everything about him, but knows less the next day. He struggles with the inevitable, but we journey with the couple as they deal with the time they have left. The film touches on the resilience of the human spirit and how that carries us, years later when only one side remembers.
