Happy Death Day 2U [Blu-ray]

Prepare for a disappointing ending
I loved the first 80% of this. It was smart, funny, and even had a few touching emotional beats. Got to give it credit for that. But the last twenty percent (including the mid credits scene) appeared to be written by someone completely different, someone whose writing and plotting skills need some serious help. It headed off in a too over the top, frequently bad slapstick direction, and the characters you became involved with became barely two dimensional cardboard cutouts.Kind of a shame. The first movie was a gem all the way through. This one got screwed up by a lack of imagination. Oh well, can't have everything. I might have bought the blu-ray but for that last 20%.

Complicated is right but you should still watch it
Ok the first one was perfect. This one, you have to watch it if you liked the first one to see where the story is going. It was an ok movie, but lacked something that the first one had to make it special. It was an ok story.I feel like it needed more comedy, more mystery and more references to back to the future part two. I mean they did a better job on Big Bang theory with smart nerds and the back to the future 2 timeline. That skit was so funny. This one, they used a napkin and it was not very easy to see but I knew what they were talking about. Then, the machine and math was long and drawn out and the focus where the first one the focus was the mysterious killer. The overall story about her choosing her mom and boyfriend was good. That’s why I gave it 3 stars and say you should watch it if you like the first one. But I felt like it lacked something special that the first one had.

it's déjà vu all over again, again
Whew! I had an awful feeling when the movie opened, and I started eyeballing a minor character who seemingly got bumped up to lead status. Luckily for me and the world at large, the situation rights itself as, minutes later, Jessica Rothe resumes her starring role. When I first heard a sequel was in the works for Happy Death Day, I couldn't figure out how that would work. Well, they figured out a way. But whether you're down - or not - with the premise they came up with...Me, I preferred the ambiguity of the original movie's not explaining the source of the time loop. It lent a certain unfathomable sense of wonder to the story. In Happy Death Day 2U - and spoilers now! - the plot brought in Science. So, now, we know why Bayfield U was suffering those rolling blackouts. It's to do with the .7 millinewtons of energy that was discharged at 12:01am, on Monday, September the 18th - Tree's birthday. Huh. Who knew Bayfield U had a quantum mechanics lab?To quote some mafia guy: "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!" Pobrecita, Tree Gelbman, once again stuck reliving that horrific day ad nauseam. Only, this time, there's a swerve in how she exits her day. Sure, occasionally, she still gets murderized by that stalker in the creepy baby mask - and, to paraphrase someone, why pick a creepy baby for a school mascot? But Tree has more of a say now in how she gets bumped off. This sequel still has some of the DNA of the first movie. It's still a slasher flick. Only, the comedy's more pronounced. But it lacks the bite and originality of the first movie. And, here, a victim makes those aggravating dumb choices, like fleeing from the killer by leaving a crowd and running to a dark, abandoned area.3.5 out of 5 stars for this one. No points for originality, but I do appreciate the new situation in which Tree finds herself. So, it's the same premise - Tree reliving her birthday over and over - only, now, there are these new changes that have drastically altered the stakes. Same characters, but new relationship dynamics. Same creepy baby mask, new killer. One change is so huge on a personal level that it dramatically shifts Tree's priorities. Ergo, her repurposed mission.Hint: know that the sequel benefits greatly from your having recently watched the first movie. It just provides a stronger viewing experience. No surprise, the high-energy Rothe is the movie's driving force. She's just phenomenal at making you invest in her character. She's on point with the comic beats, but she's also fantastic in those moving, emotional moments. If you doubt her star power, let me go back to how the movie opens focused on that minor character, and how that was such a letdown. But the moment Rothe steps back into the lead role, there's a palpable shift onscreen. Things immediately get livelier; there's more punch to the storytelling. She's easily the best part of the movie, and I appreciate that there's been growth to her character. It's a good cast of unknowns. I've even come around on Ryan (Phi Vu) whom I couldn't stand in the first movie and early on in this one. One standout is Rachel Matthews who reprises her role of Danielle, the resident mean girl. She's good with cutting down her victims with her scathing one-liners, and I just about rolled on the floor laughing at her scene with the jerk college dean (Steve Zissis). What else is good? I appreciate that the movie borrows from the plot mechanics of Edge of Tomorrow, in that it skips certain repetitive scenes and trusts that you can keep up with what's going on. It asks you to play along that, yes, each time she comes back, Tree is able to convince her friends of what's going on and the stakes involved. What's not good? The main villain is weak.Stick around for a post-credit scene that hints at a possible trajectory for the next sequel, if there is a sequel. Except I hope they're kidding with that scene. I don't care to see that storyline explored.

I love this franchise
I wouldn't expect myself to like this movie or the one before it, but I do. It's funny and keeps you guessing, trying to find out who the killer is and how it is going to end. This film has some good sentimental moments, good funny moments and it is fun to watch. To expect chills and thrills, but do expect comedy with a some science fiction thrown in there. Jessica Rothe is great!

A good continuation
If you like the first one, this one will not disappoint. Tree finds herself in another time loop and fights to get out of it. There are a lot of laughs, yet again. You get to know more of the characters on a more intimate level. I can't say much without giving stuff away, but I truly enjoyed this movie.

Though it was a good sequel to Happy Death Day
I saw the reviews and looks like there are mixed ratings for this sequel. I LOVED the first movie and even though I had no idea how they could do anything to top the first movie, I bought it to see where it was going. I LOVED that they actually figured out why the "relive" days were happening to Tree. I really like the science behind it and how they explained what happened. Don't want to say too much. I think the first movie was the BEST one, partly because it was new and creative and you had no idea what was going on, but I am impressed that they were able to actually create something new and fresh when I thought they had done all they could do the first time around. I was wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would love if they made more but I am not so sure about having the Danielle character as part of the guinea pig for the experiment. I don't know we'll see if they choose to do any more and if they follow that story line but the second one was well done. I have to say it was hard to see Tree start all over again, rather horrifying to think she was stuck AGAIN reliving the 18th again, but it was interesting and still fun and intense to watch. Great job!

Better than the first!
If you read my review for the first film you will see how much I hated it! It was a super cliched mess of a film trying to be hip in the modern way and falling flat on it's face. Anyone who's seen a lot of horror and comedy shouldn't like it.I only watched the follow up because everyone kept telling me it was a different direction and nothing like the first so I went into it expecting nothing! I was very pleasantly surprised! So the story of Tree is pretty much resolved (unless you watch the deleted ending which I think was better than the theatrical ending) so she can get on with her life..... But along comes Ryan with an interesting story to tell, one which is far too familiar to Tree! The film switches gears pretty fast to a Sci-Fi film over a horror/comedy which I think was the right idea. Okay, there's a subplot which you could argue isn't resolved, but I'm fine with it because this really isn't a smart film. The acting is not the best but then it feels more like the director was more interested in being pals with the cast so he didn't push them too much. No bad thing within the genre. As for the Blu-ray. The special features are pretty rubbish. Just the basics to fill the disc.

Exceptional
The first film was a great comedy. Follow up films rarely deliver, at best they are sort of fine. But this film is simply so much better than the first. As with the first it's a great comedy, but this time round it is also a great drama. Both elements are well mixed.I found it really interesting how they developed the story: a lot of thought was put into the plot line. It's not simply a case of `I know let cash in on a successful film, and produce any old rubbish'. Fans of the first will not be disappointed. While I suppose it can be seen as a stand alone film, I would recommend watching the first film before this one.

Nice sequel
This is a decent sequel to what I thought was a decent play on a long standing idea in movies and TV dating back more than 60 years. Yes there were movies about this subject matter of being stuck in the same day way before groundhog day.

Great horror sequel!
Forget what the haters say! This was a great sequel, which in my opinion surpasses the original! More depth, great story and ties in with the first installment perfectly. There are twists and turns that keep you gripped and guessing throughout. I reccomend that you any horror fan to check this movie. Would love it if there was a second sequel!

Poor sequel
As with most sequels this one fails . With little sense no characters even the humour is poor . By half way it’s monotonous .
