No. In the moving business, this is called a "Johnson Bar" and is used to lift heavy objects, to allow you to put wheels or dollies under the object. The only way it will stay in the "up" position is to have a 2nd person hold it down on the end of the handle. It has no lock.

For our purpose 6 foot was good, but if the machine is very heavy my answer would be yes.

I use this item often. I level counters that have 6" tall legs and I can lift them 2-3" higher than than. So I would say you can lift 8-10" max.
