Ideal book for Java beginners
The authors style of explaining concepts makes it a very easy read. This book was a textbook required for my course and at the end I am satisfied having purchased this book. The book appears to be very verbose with repetitions, but the author explains concepts in a very easy to grasp style, which can be very useful to readers being introduced to Java for the first time. The book is not for advanced Java developers - the author deliberately has kept out the complex Java features to make it easy for beginners. So, if you are still learning Java, I would definitely recommend reading this book.

It's a textbook and it can get confusing but it ...
It's a textbook and it can get confusing but it helped me to understand quite a bit of what I was getting behind on.

Shipped fast and it was cheaper than at school.
PRO: The seller shipped this fast and the key was not scratched. Cheaper than at school. Looks nice on the shelf though...CONS: Although it does contain basic information, it has not helped me once in my entire class and my teacher said this book is mandatory in order to be successful in the class. If your teacher doesn't require you to buy one then I'd stay away from this book and use Youtube videos to study the concepts taught in class. You can get the exact same content this book offers there, and for free from multiple people and in different ways.OTHER: I kind of regret my purchase now since I have never used it once in my entire class and most likely my teacher will ask for another book next semester. I'll have to ask for sure how we are actually going to use the book. I paid $95 to carry this with me to school and never used it and that's just a waste of money.

Good, but tends to bog itself down in over-explaining
This was the required text book for my Uni course on Programming Fundamentals, which used Java as its language base. Having had no prior Java experience, this book did help as it was in depth to each related subject, and does give good coding examples. To summarise my experience:The Good:- Lots of code examples- Adhering to standards- Points out common errors made- Good editing with little error rate- Website has a very good Video tutor who explains well and does not complicate like the book does...- Those videos are mostly less than 10 minutes long and greatly enhance understandingThe Bad:- The code examples, as they get larger later in the book, get un-weildly and refer back often several pages- Over-explains some very simple concepts and in the process just confuses- For beginners some overly heavy technical wording in an explanation can get confusing- An example of an attempt to describe a pretty simple concept became this:"So, the parameter becomes another name for the argument, and any change made to the object named by the parameter is made to the object named by the argument, because they are the same object."So while it makes sense, if you already understand what they are saying (and if you did, you didn't need that anyway), but way too many self referencing when clarifying a simple process to supposedly beginners...Best parts are the green boxes that give short, clear explanations of the method/parameter etc. These are very clear and tend not to be as confusing as the main text. This main text seems to want to go "in-depth" when in a lot of cases there is no further need to keep explaining. In short, a good book for standards and base learning, but it helped to have another book on hand to look at when the attempts at perfect technicalities overwhelmed a simple process.

All the basics, clear and direct
This book has been clear and efficient. It is the selected text for course SWE510 at George Mason University. It's easy to read and really teaches you the basics step by step. I've been working with Java in 3+ courses before this, and this is the first time I feel like I actually have the core ideas of inheritance, polymorphism, OOP, really explained fully.

The textbook was way more useful than my professor
The textbook was way more useful than my professor, i'll say that much.Easy to read, fairly articulate explanations if you follow the examples provided. Exercises in the book are a lot more time consuming than one would think they should be.For beginners - reading this book start to finish will give you a great overview of Java. Be patient and read the details, they matter.

A useful textbook and reference
A needed text book that we were able to get quickly and easily so that a course could be completed in a timely fashion. The text will be a useful reference later on after the course is complete.
