Well worth the price
I previously owned a Lexmark X1290 that was hit and miss on Vista. In the end the Lexmark would only print (poor quality at best) instead of allowing me to scan, copy and print photos. I could never get the software to function thus it rendered the printer basically useless. The HP 4180 was purchased for the price, the reputation of HP and the consistently favorable reviews. It works well with Vista which is important since my PC is new and only shipped with Vista. So far I have printed several documents and a couple of photos. I've scanned a few items as well. I'm very pleased with the function of the 4180. It is rather noisy when printing though. The lowest setting for printing in draft mode prints a very readeable and clear type. The availability of ink (reasonably priced) and the selection between mild usage (hp 21 & 22) or heavy usage (hp 54 & 57) ink is a positive to me. I also like the fact that the design of the 4180 takes up much less space than my previous printer. The software with the HP is basic but functional. The photo software is of the most basic. I would recommend Adobe Photoshop or Roxio as the main photo editor. All in all I'm glad for the purchase through Amazon. The price was excellent and the printer arrived in just five days.

Don't Buy!
Do NOT WASTE your money on this printer. I have tried many printers for many years and I think this is the worst. First of all I only bought this because I had a job to finish and my longtime HP 3 in1 finally died on me. This one arrived with the plastic paper holder broken. When I notified the seller about this I was basically ignored becauseI asked them to replace the part. The ink that came with it was expired so I bought more thinking this would help the quality of the print...but nothing changed. It got worse with each attempt to print. No more HP for me I have switched to laser and another company.

Great Performer, Great Price!
A nifty, small-footprint, multi-capable machine...and at a bargain price.Installation and set-up was darned-near transparent (even with Windows Vista Home Premium) - this thing was up and running in no time without a single glitch. The ink cartridges are tiny, and rather than purchasing new carts every six months (as with our HP 4215) we buy them every 3 to 4 months now...BUT, they cost a lot less than the carts for the other printer.Print quality is what you'd expect: not as good as the cheapest laser when printing strictly black text, and as good as other HP injket products when printing color. No complaints. There are features we haven't even used yet with this machine, but it's worked fine for basic copying and printing of text.Bottom line: highly-recommended, given the terrific price. You won't find anything better for less money.

I like it, Great price has great features.
I was never a big HP fan. I know they build a lot of junk. But my mother has 2 of there printers. One which is 7 years old and still working. And the other is 3 years old. She uses both and can still buy Ink for them. I was always was into Lexmark and spent good money on there printers. But I had there most recent printer for only 3 years and now its giving me problems. I end up throwing it out after I tried fixing it since I am a technician. Its seems to me that Lexmark is not all about quality anymore. As for HP printers they are definite quality if they last as long as my mothers and still work like the first day you bought them. And for such a great price for a All in One. I could not resist, so far I like it, and I think it has great software and capabilities for the price.

Poor Quality
This all in one printer is of poor quality,,HP is going down hill,,would never by a HP again,,this machine is very light weight you can carry it with one hand,,the paper tray is of cheap thin plastic and will crack if you not carefull,,the scan buttom on top of the machine won't work unless it's off and you turn your computer on first then turn the printer on,,printing is slow,,,this machine is very noisy and loud,,,got it yesterday and Im sending it back at any cost,,,

just ok, I expect more from HP
First, I don't know if this is standard practice, but the printer didn't come with the usb cable to connect it to your pc. HP generally isn't the cheapest brand, but I've generally felt the quality of the product warranted the price. Cost cutting like this really leave a bad aftertaste. The software is a bit of a let down too. Once installed, it will automatically whatever is under the flatbed when you click the 'scan' button on the unit. Only problem is that it doesn't let you name the file, show it to you when it's done, or give any indication where it is (my documents\my scans).Overall, the the printer/scanner itself is great. The print speed is fine and the scan quality is excellent. It's just disappointing that they didn't put the finishing touches on it to make it the total package it could have been.

Great Value and Performance!
Great value and performance for the dollar. I am in Iraq and initally wanted a scanner for my Army documents. A battle buddy suggested this item. I looked it up online at Amazon and felt it met my needs and then some. And, for the price I felt I could take a flyer. I give it a definite 5. Loading the software was easy. The scanning is easy. The copying and printing is great. My copies are clear, neat, quality printing, good color and photo printing on 20 paper is really very good. I have printed some pictures and sent some to those who do not yet have computer savvy. This is an excellent affordable Printer/Scanner/Copier for any environment. And, No, I did not get paid for this write-up. :-)
