Q: How big is it finished? How old/ young of child is it ment for?

4' long 2' tall. Made it for grandson who was 11/2. He had no trouble getting on still rides it at 21/2. Would think he can use it till 5

Q: Has anyone built this out of common 2" pine dimensional lumber and then painted it rather than using expensive 8/4?

Yes pine works and stain or paint can be used for a finish. I made one that the body was stained dark and painted on details. A word of caution SYP ( southern yellow pine) will gum up bandsaw blades which requires cleaning them to cut effectively.

Q: Is the pattern for each piece the full size that is actually needed? I dont want to have tape together or enlarge anything. Just trace then cut!

No the patterns are not full size. They would need to be enlarged.

Q: What tools are needed for this project?

A bandsaw would help a lot. If you don’t have one, a jigsaw will work. Otherwise, basic hand tools like a drill, clamps, a sander will be needed. For the bridle, check Tandy Leather or leather outlets. The plan comes with instructions for making the mane and the tail.
