I personally like the feel of the pieces, including the weight of as you feel the chess piece while making a move. Has a good feel which is important to me. I really like this chess set for my needs. My friends and I were just learning to play chess and we wanted a low cost, portable, yet nice looking chess set and this set meets our needs. Be advised that this is not a "high quality" product. The pieces and board feel cheap, but it's perfect for those who are either just getting into the game or looking for a portable set to play on the road that still looks nice without spending too much money. The magnets seem to work very well; they are strong enough to hold the pieces onto the board, even while upside down, yet are still effortless to remove from the board while playing. Honestly, the pieces are so lightweight and easy to lift that I sometimes forget that they are magnetic. The board is also labeled with 1-8 and A-H which are visible from both sides. This is great for not only easily announcing your moves, but also for writing down each move in the event that you want to start getting into more advanced chess playing. Overall, I think that this chess set is perfect for new/intermediate players and I have been very happy with it. As I continue to get better at the game, I imagine that I will eventually want to upgrade to a nicer and higher quality board. However, for the time being, this is perfect! Note: If you are a serious/advanced chess player, you probably would not enjoy this board. Advanced players would probably want to invest in a higher end chess board.

It is a nice little chess set. I bought it for my child as a travel and 'school-lunch break' set. After 7 months of moderate usage (a few hours a week), it is holding just fine. It does what it was meant to do: be a small but playable inexpensive chess set, with coordinates, that will travel and that will not cause a heartache if lost, destroyed or stolen. The magnets are strong enough to prevent the pieces from falling due to a gentle shaking or movement but they do not exactly cling to the board. One little note: although the set has always been kept protected in its packaging box when not in use (obvious), the metal sheet slightly detached in the middle of the board and created a little bump that can't be easily flattened. I guess that too many pawn battles may have taken place in the center squares! While the deformation is not exactly aesthetically pleasing, it does not hinder the game play. I suggest that you keep the pieces in a ziploc bag. My child suggest including two extra queens ;) - it would be perfect! He also occasionally uses it as an analysis board. I would buy it again.

Stores great! Fits all the pieces with a little extra room left. It feels like a normal chess board just a little slower because of the magnetic feature. It good when traveling because the chess board fold back and clicks together with the pieces inside. Just a good chess board.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my child. After using it all this time, I can say it has held up much better than I expected. At this price range, it does everything I expected and hasn't just fallen apart. Pros: - Silver and Gold are very distinct colors. Other reviews mention they are not. Maybe the set has changed. But mine is just like the photo. Very Silver and very Gold in pretty much any light. - Magnets strength is sufficient for car use and uneven surfaces. Not super strong magnets, but I can hold the set upside down and the pieces stay in place. Sure, they will fall if I shake the board. But I wasn't expecting super magnets. This balance of magnet strength also feels nice when moving the pieces. If they were any stronger, you would be lifting the board and need to hold the board down. I find the magnet strength just right. Cons: - Cheap China product. Yet this is exactly how the price is kept low and that makes it a good value. The thin edge around the board will be prone to snap at the corners. This doesn't affect the playing area. I actually wish those corners were rounded. Only one corner has snapped so far. - Doesn't really stay closed reliably. So we store it in the box it came with. To avoid this, I recommend a simple rubber band. Problem solved. So not much of a con here either. Neutral: - Good portable size. But some people may find a 9.7" board on the small side. At the price, size, and features; this is a great set. Especially if you are not sure the recipient will even like Chess. If you love Chess and want to spend a lot more money, there are plenty of better sets. The value of this set worked perfectly for me and my kids.

Overall I like the size, and pieces. One silver pawn is brown, I assume unpainted. Not game breaking by any means but not exactly aesthetically pleasing. I plan to use this to play with my husband as we both want to learn. I do wish the game board itself was magnetic at its fold, so when playing on an uneven surface it could still be straight.
