Know which drive to use - they all aren't the same.
You need determine your needs before you purchase a hard drive. Quite simply, they are not all the same. This is a reliable drive, and it's the one you need to purchase if you plan on recording security cameras. I've been piecing together NVRs to record UHD (4K) images from IP cameras. I had originally planned on purchasing one of those 4-8 security camera units available at some of the membership stores. The cameras wouldn't work, but I curious to know what HDs were used by these companies. When I opened up the NVR I immediately saw a Western Digital Purple drive. The purple drive is rated for continuous recording, with minimum chance of failure, in a security system setup. If you check the Western Digital site you can see which drives are best for which use.I've been pleased with the WD Purple drive, it has a large capacity, and it has the ability to continuously write information from many cameras simultaneously. I would recommend this WD Purple drive to others.I hope you find this review helpful.

This is THE drive for surveillance systems
I'm sure there's going to be more than enough highly technical and lengthy reviews of this drive sooner than later here so I'm going to keep mine short and sweet.First, my home surveillance system:Aver 8-channel "Hybrid" HVR/NVR which employs two ports for IP cameras, and six ports for full D1 analog cameras. For the two IP cameras I'm using Vivotek 1.3MP units, and for the analogs I'm using six 750TVL Sony SuperHAD II / EFFIO DSP chipped units. My problem:I've owned this system for nearly a year now, and have always had issues with the two ip cameras not recording smooth video. Any time motion would occur to activate full fps recording the system would freeze/pause and result in lost frames. I was also limited to a slow 5fps with the ip cameras as well before massive stuttering would occur. My initial troubleshooting attempt:After spending an insane amount of money on all new network equipment, upgraded cat6 wiring, etc. nothing seemed to help. I even suspected the Seagate Enterprise drive that was originally supplied with the unit by my retailer, so they elected to swap it out for a Western Digital Green AV-GP drive, which at that time was supposed to be the latest and greatest for surveillance systems, but that didn't help either. In fact, I think it actually made things worse. So after spending countless hours researching over the course of several months, I stumble on a cctv forum and see that people are talking about this new "purple" drive so I go to the Western Digital website, and start investigating.........and I am SO glad I did. And, finally, the resolution:Having nothing to lose, and already owning, and loving, the Red drives in my home server (the drive this purple drive is based on) I went ahead and ordered a 4TB WD Purple drive to try to rule out the hard drive being my issue one last time, and low and behold, that's exactly what the issue was all along. Instantly upon turning my system on with the new purple drive installed, I saw a huge difference. CPU usage was down almost 30%, video was smooth, and there wasn't a single stutter or loss of frame that I could see. In case you're wondering why CPU usage dropped, it's because my system was being bottlenecked by the hard drive and it was trying to write to a drive that couldn't keep up with the task thus causing higher than normal CPU usage.Being in this position before I almost thought it was too good to be true so I didn't get too excited just yet, but after running for 3 days now, this purple drive hasn't missed a beat. It's near silent, runs cool, and has solved all of my stuttering and loss of frame issues. I am also now able to increase the fps of my ip cameras as well.I know I'm only 3 days into this, but so far so good. After using both the Seagate Enterprise and the WD AV-GP drives, this drive simply runs circles around them.I highly recommend this drive for anyone with a surveillance system, hands down.

Perfect for Surveillance system
This review is for the WD Purple 4TB HDIt came packed well. I'm using it in a Swann DVR 4500. (4TB is the max for the 4500.) I plugged the HD in and initialized it and it all when well. It has been running for several days with no problem. I can access the video with no problem and it is fast. I have had other WD hard drives with no problems so that's why I tried this one. Be sure if you are getting a new hard drive for your surveillance system you get the correct drive. Some people think you can put a regular hard drive in a surveillance system and when it crashes they blame the hard drive. Also check with your manufacture to see what your system can handle.
