Can wine be stored on it's side without leaking and if not why would it leak?

For short periods yes, storing on the side would be fine. The vacuum seal is not perfect though so after a few days it would probably start leaking.

These are made of silicone and rubber and are BPA free

Yes it is easy to pump. Especially this newer model which does not pull as good of a vacuum compared to my older model did.
