Q: Why is this radio so ridiculously expensive compared to the better reviewed, larger models from the same brand? Is it actually worth it?

They are trying to be retro without a cheesy plastic case.They are trying to get a somewhat older sound, the reason for one speaker. The enclosure is a ported (or bass reflex) enclosure, you pay for that, the other more modern design looking radios are neither sealed (acoustic suspension) nor ported, both found in stereo systems, just speakers in a plastic box. You can run it off the wall or an external battery. The tuner is stereo if you output the sound via of the output jack on the back, or headphones, so the turner which is very good could front end an amp.It has a simple old no nonsense design of the past, that many people like, a decent wood cabinet, has good sound and is a good desk, book shelf, boat, kitchen radio. You can buy and plug in a blue tooth device in the back, I prefer this because a lot of time built-in Bluetooth in devices like this can't get thier firmware upgraded.Yes, it's would it, especially if you enjoy, less is more, objects for their design and looks.

its more on the "boomy" side but I like more of a base sound - no there is not tone control. Its a great sounding little radio I think :)

Q: Can this radio run on batteries only?

Hi. All my e!ectricity is 12 volt, off the grid, so I got a 12 volt adapter that plugs into a 12V socket, so in that sense it CAN run off batteries but it has no place to insert batteries.
