Q: My mug makes a bubbling sound when I open dishwasher. It’s like water is boiling in the walls of the mug. Is this normal?

Sorry this happened ... It shouldn't have even in the dishwasher. The disk on the bottom that was mentioned is only cosmetic. A customer in this thread wrote: "Water gets up in the welding. Idk if it’s because it’s not dishwasher safe or if it’s a defect, but water gets up through the logo on the bottom" -- This is not actually true. Any water exiting that area is not coming from inside the mug. It's coming from under the cosmetic disk that covers that vacuum sealing. It wipes away and that is it. The mug is one solid piece. Q: Does the lid have any protection tp prevent the liquid from spilling out?

Lid sits very well on the mug. Liquid will spill if you were to tilt or turn it upside down. No particular stopper for 'drinking gap' on the lid. I hope this helps!
