Great value with taste
Chicken of the Sea Jack Mackerel is a solid choice for anyone who enjoys canned fish. The flavor is fresh, not overly salty, and works well in salads, pasta, or patties. The 15 oz cans are a good size and provide a decent amount of fish, making it convenient for family meals. I like that it’s wild caught and packed in brine, which keeps it natural and versatile for cooking. The pack of 12 is very economical and ensures I always have some stocked up. Overall, it’s tasty, nutritious, and a great value for the price.

Good source of protein; Exactly as it should be
The Jack Mackerel arrives here well packaged, no serious dents. The count is always accurate, so we can plan in that fact. The value of the mackerel is worth our purchase of it. The mackerel is canned with briney water and its aroma and flavor is exactly as it should be. It's high protein, of course, and full of natural sea vitamins and minerals. Any bones in it are very soft and a source of calcium -- quite edible. We have no complaints about this product.

Low on cash ? Got a headache ? Check it out.
Long read ahead with a recipe 🙂 This canned Mackerel in brine is very versatile. You can use this Mackerel in place of canned tuna or canned salmon. Use this canned Mackerel in everything from salad, casserole, soup, sandwiches, and even good old get you by mac and cheese. So if you are low on cash this is a great choice for a person. If you are at home or on the road this is a food you want. Now I ain't no doctor, yet look up the healthy benefits of Mackerel. It contains omega - 3's, vitamins, minerals, and choline. If you are curious go look it up I found it rather interesting. Coming from someone who has suffered from chronic migraine headaches for many years I will recommend eating Mackerel because it seems to reduce the frequency and severity of headaches. I cannot tell you why but it seems to help. Here is my simple recipe for Mackerel patties. What you need- 1 can of Mackerel in brine. 1 sleeve saltene crackers crushed. 2 Eggs. black pepper as desired. Lard or sunflower oil for frying as needed. First open and drain the Mackerel save a little of the brine. Now place in a bowl and break it up really good with a fork. If you want add pepper until you have it tasting how you like it. Now whisk those 2 eggs together with a fork and pour that into the bowl. Break up your sleeve of saltene crackers and dump those in too. mixing everything together really good and if you can place in refrigerator for at least 15 minutes. Now if your mix is too dry and will not hold together add a little brine mix again. Next shape four patties. Heat up your pan for a few minutes get it good and evenly hot. Then add a at least two tablespoons of sunflower oil or lard let that get hot. Place the patties into the pan and fry them. I sprinkle a little pepper on the sides turning them until both sides are brown. I cook for probably 3 or 4 minutes per side sometimes longer if I want them more crispy. A good size low buck meal thst doesn't take long. Options- If you want to add a little flavor to the above recipe give this a try. Chop up some onion and fry it caramelize it placing it to the side so you can mix it in your Mackerel mix. Use duck eggs you will get a better flavor. Add some lemon or lime juice for a little zing. Add 1/4 cup mayonnaise or miracle whip if you want them more moist. Add 1 tsp old bay seasoning or whatever seasoning you enjoy or have. If you don't have saltenes thats fine. Just thoroughly dry out some bread inside the oven so it breaks up into crumbs. Dark rye or pumpernickel bread gives it a better flavor. Cooking these outside on a camp stove or over a fire in a cast skillet is delicious too.

Mild, Drenched, Salty.
Mild flavor. Drenched with a watery liquid. Fairly salty for some reason. Chicken of the sea has a clean, fresh flavor that is consistent with their high quality standards, however that equates to a very mild mackerel flavor, overly watered down product that has been seasoned with salt beyond an enjoyable level. Great product if you want to eat it straight out of the bag without worry of offending others with the strong, fishy odor that mackerel is famous for. It's unfortunate that I don't find it suitable for use in other entrée dishes. Value for the money?: Yes. Ease of use?: Very easy. Easy to store?: Yes. Versatile?: Not in my opinion. Would I buy it again?: Yes, but not expecting to use it for anything but a snack food.

Quite a bargain for the nutrition it offers
There is a lot of chunky, nearly whole fish packed inside each can. If you love fish, you will like this product. I am thankful for the recipe enclosed within one of these reviews! I actually buy this by the case for my dogs and cats. Dog and cat food is so expensive these days, and full of fillers and plant protein, which is not utilized well by our carnivore pets. This product can't be beat for nutrition to $$ ratio! One problem is bent cans. Not sure why, but I get bent cans in each shipment. Last time, in my subscription box, was a case of this mackerel that had apparently been drop from up high. The cans were so severely damaged, some were actually bent over the top of their neighboring cans. The box itself was pretty severely damaged and it was plain to see how the box had hit the ground very hard to make this sort of extensive damage. It had to have happened before it left the Amazon packing line because nothing else in the box was damaged. There was no indication that the shipping company had dropped or damaged the box that contained several of my subscription items, including the boxed case of mackeral. Every can in the case was bent severely, so much so that I would never serve this to myself nor my animals. I wouldn't have been able to open them anyway, with a normal can opener. So, I called Amazon right away. Because I have many montly subscriptions, and buy from Amazon regularly, they told me they would waive the "no return" policy on food JUST THIS ONCE. They refunded me and I discarded the cans, sadly. I immediately canceled my subscription because if this happens again, I am out the money, by no fault of my own, of course. Well, after searching, I cannot find such a bargain for this type of fish. I have reluctantly and cautiously resubscribed. I hope this never happens again, but if it does, I will have to accept the loss. Side note: I had received numerous shipments prior with only slight issues with a few very slightly dented cans, which I did indeed use with no proplems.

Better as an ingredient than a snack
I enjoy all kinds of tinned fish, in particularly yellowfin tuna, sardines, salmon, trout, and mackerel. I like tuna the best, but limit my consumption to around the levels recommended by the FDA to restrict mercury intake. Mackerel is the closest of the tinned fish to tuna, in general character, so it is my preference. I purchased this purely because it offers a far superior dollar value than other options on the market. In brief, I would say this is inferior to smaller, 4.5oz tins of mackerel, like those sold by King Oscar. The fish are large and meaty, but more bony and a bit less tender. I found them to have a slight "formaldehyde" taste at times, which isn't terribly uncommon in large tins of fish but undesirable. Since these are in brine, I had to add my own oil, and while this works well enough in drained tuna here I found it didn't integrate well. Lastly, for me, 15oz is too much to consume in one go, but I really don't like putting the leftovers in the fridge as I like my tinned fish room temperature, not cold. So the fish is of an adequate quality, but it doesn't fit my needs. I knew this was a risk when buying it, so I don't regret doing so, but having tried it I'd say if you want a snacking mackerel go with the ~4.5oz tins of fillets in oil instead of these. If you want mackerel for adding to a dish, I think these would be quite suitable.
