Smells like a steak dinner...
"Rakasa" is my first introduction to the work of Kyle Warner, a writer known for science fiction, horror and dark fantasy. "Rakasa" (the Indonesian word for "monster") easily falls into the horror category (survival-horror to be exact). As a movie buff, I couldn't help to think of "Rakasa" as "Die Hard on an deserted island" laced with hardcore gore. However, the story doesn't involve a hero with good intentions, it involves a selfish, yet very likable (from a reader's point of view) pirate who desperately takes on savage creatures on a deserted island. Using his quick wit and scarce resources, this pirate does anything he can do to survive a nightmare that he can't awaken from."Rakasa" is a page-tuner that's full of suspense, action, terror and snappy humor. Warner's handling of the first-person narrative structure is exceptional. He puts you at the center of the hellish predicament he created. Warner gets down and dirty with his masterfully written descriptions. I honestly can't think of one dull moment in the book.Someone like Mel Gibson, an intense filmmaker – and one that doesn't hold back – needs to bring Warner's graphic detail to life. I can see it! If you're a fan of horror and blood 'n guts is your thing, you'll find that these elements are just the tip of the iceberg. "Rakasa" is some seriously good stuff!

Fast, unflinching horror that makes use of its period genre setting
RAKASA is a very quick read, and it hits hard. Dark, violent, nihilistic, it still finds time to make use of its period setting in an effective way - the format even recalls an old seafaring journal, which adds to the atmosphere. The story effectively builds suspense as it escalates to a finale that delivers on creature action as much as it delivers the frights, and into a surprising ending that I question the complete truth of - after all, hunger and trauma on a deserted island will play with one's mind. It's not all dour, too, as a very dark sense of humor pokes through on occasion. Enjoyable read for a period horror fan.

Fast and fun
After finishing the author's epic "In the Shadow of Extinction," I was immediate such a fan of Mr. Warner's writing that I decided to give "Rakasa" a try. I'm very glad that I did."Rakasa" is a fun, fast-paced, and violent quick read. The story manages to combine pirates, monsters, mysterious islands, and bone-crunching action into a perfect afternoon read. If you're looking for a lean, mean, nasty novella, you can't do much better than Rakasa. Mr. Warner is rapidly becoming my favorite independent author!

Excellent tale
This was not a story I would've chosen on my own but I thoroughly enjoyed it's wickedness and uniqueness. There are pirates, rhinoceros, love, hate, violence, hard decisions and SO much more! This was exciting, short, surprising, and definitely entertaining. I recemmend this to all fans of modern horror and will most likely read it again. Yay!
