About the Author Betsy Page Sigman Betsy Page Sigman is a distinguished professor at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. She has taught courses in statistics, project management, databases, and electronic commerce for the last 16 years, and has been recognized with awards for teaching and service. Before arriving at Georgetown, she worked at George Mason University, the U.S. Bureau of the Census, Decision/Making/Information, the American Enterprise Institute, and the Social Science Data Center (now Roper Center) at the University of Connecticut. Recent publications include a Harvard Business case study and a Harvard Business review article, articles in the Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education and Decision Line, and a case study in Educause Review Online. Outdated - jury’s out
Maybe it is me, but the Splunk 101 you get for free is far different than anything in this book. Anyone that uses Splunk knows that the command line keywords are what dictate the actions. This book did not really provide that help which makes me think that this book was first to market before major upgrades.

Good starting place
Quick delivery, provides the "essentials" :). However, I wish a simple working configuration would have been provided. I am still struggling to get Splunk to work in my home lab system.

This is an outdated book. The hypertext links do not work which is very frustrating when trying to follow the steps for exercises.

This is a somewhat poor overview of Splunk. Mostly it plays off the examples and data already on the website. Would love to find a decent Splunk text.

Save your money - this book is way overpriced.

Rather disappointing
I started with a hard copy book, I still prefer those when I need to quickly flip through the pages. I see a bunch of screen shots, most of them are too blurry to read, but I can follow the book okay. Then I come to this gem about tagging, stating that "you can see here that....has been tagged as..." No, actually I can't see a damn thing in the screenshot on that page. Download the PDF, blow it up to 200%, same thing. And the reason to look at the screenshot to begin with was that the text is not clear. I think $30 can be better spent elsewhere.Edit: Well, I finished the book. On page 90, you see the heading "Creating a Splunk applications". Very telling of the rest of the book - lack of attention to detail aside, there is nothing in it telling you how to create an app. But it's got plenty of blurry screenshots. I need to downgrade this to 1 star.

From Downloading Splunk to Using and Understanding It
This book does exactly what it sets out to do. It provides "a straightforward, practical, and quick introduction to Splunk." Dr. Sigman recognizes that getting your hands dirty and asking your own questions by querying Big Data is the best way to get a handle on what is meant by the term. If you want to start leveraging Big Data in your decision-making, this book will get you to where you can do more than just install Splunk and run some sample queries -- you will actually be in a position to start answering your own questions using it. You will only spend a few hours with this book, and that is its intent.
