Never buy the steel capsule. It breaks the machine very quick and no way to repair it. Just save the capsules you have already, and buy the foil seals from here that comes with tools necessary to help fil them up with your fav coffee grounds.

Can I use fresh ground coffee instead of pods?

Yes, cut the foil seal off the used capsules and use the plastic lids you can buy on Amazon for this purpose.

I see this item as "verto plus". how does the "verto plus deluxe" differ for $14 more?

I just bought the deluxe from Nespresso not only a bigger water tank but it has Chrome instead of plastic. I wanted this Titan color to match my appliances and someone gave me a promo code I got an extra $40 off plus a free pod little holder so I went with the Deluxe.

What is the aero? Do I need it or should I only buy the machine?

It is how you get the milk or cream to froth. I use it all the time. Makes the coffee much better. I certainly would get it.
