Grizzly Mountain Beard Dye - Organic & Natural Dark Brown Beard Dye

I gave it a good value for the money because it worked for me & didn't cause any skin irritation. My wife is quite a bit younger than me & my beard was mostly grey (quite white actually), with a bit of dark brown still in the mustached and a little bit between the chin & lower lip. My hair is still a dark brown, but about an inch of grey at the temples. I've had a beard since I was 18, with only relatively brief periods of time where it was shaved off. I tried Just For Men, but it caused my face to turn red, itch & get little pussy blisters under the beard that would not heal for days. Totally gross. Tried & tried doing different things to try avoiding that (less time, putting aloe on it right after cleaning it off, cleaning it off with & without soap, etc. At some point I tried powered walnut husks, which seemed to add more color to my skin than to my beard, so I stopped that quick. I also looked into henna, but based on what I'd read, I passed. Eventually saw an article that suggested alternatives for more sensitive skin, so I tried "Clairol Naturals" which actually caused the lower half of my face to swell up bizarrely. Fortunately, the wife is a nurse, so she ran out right away for Benadryl & kept an eye on me to see if we'd have to run to the emergency room. After that experience, I went all natural grey/white, but would temporary cover it with some sort of root coverup thing from Sally Beauty supply whenever I went out with the wife, but was always worried about winding up pulling a Giuliani & having it run down my face. In any event, my wife kept bugging me to shave the beard because I'd leave it white at home. Finally, I told her give me some time to try some other stuff and if it doesn't work, I'll shave it. Looked around a bit more & found this mentioned along with the Just For Men shampoo stuff (which I was leery of trying given my experience with the regular stuff). Was going to order both, along with a box of baking soda $0.77, just to reach free shipping at $25, but accidentally wound up accepting the "free" month of prime, so I removed the baking soda & the shampoo because I figured I could get free shipping on the shampoo if I order in a month if this didn't work out. Naturally, they were out of "dark brown" by the time I decided to order, so I heck with it & ordered the regular "brown" & figured if that seemed to work, I could always go darker (my hair is a dark brown). In any event, I received it on Thursday (3 days ago) and today is 3 days later (Sunday) when the picture was taken. FIRST SESSION: On Friday, at about 9 pm, I did just the dye for the full 30 mins (perhaps 35) and started watching a "free" movie on my "free" Prime while waiting the 30 mins, then cleaned it off in the sink. It smells "earthy", to me a bit like spinach or perhaps a compost pile, but that really isn't a horrid smell or anything. Reminded me of creamed spinach as I was washing it off. I did notice a bit of a greenish tint, with a little brown/light yellow added in, but it was very, very light, not a heck of a lot of color added. Finished the movie & thought it looked a bit darker by the time I went to bed. Woke up 7:30 am Saturday & thought it looked a darker than when I went to bed, but it still pretty darn light & the greenish tint remained. SECOND SESSION: Saturday (around 1:30 pm), I said heck with this, I'll try another dose. This time I did the base for 30 mins, or so. Looks & smells the same as the dye & watched another free Prime video to pass the time. Cleaned up & noticed that already it was a bit darker after applying the base, but still a light green tint. Did the dye right after for another 30 mins & watched some more of the free Prime movie. Like before, it did appear to get darker after some time passed. But, I had church to go to the next morning, so ... THIRD SESSION Saturday night (around 8pm) did another 30 min base treatment, followed by another 30 min dye treatment, including more free Prime watching. After rinsing it off, I was already impressed & figured it would be fine in the morning. When I was young, my beard was always a bit lighter than my hair and ranged from a bit lighter brown than my hair, to parts that had a bit of a reddish tone to the brown, to a bit that was almost a dirty blond color. So, in the end, I thought the regular brown worked pretty darn good. I'm happy with it & the wife likes it too, now just have to what the girlfriend thinks (just kidding). FWIW- I used it up at my temples & the little portion above my ears that is white & that wound up getting darker quicker than my beard & looks really natural with my hair. I also used a bit on my eyebrows because I have a tiny bit of grey in those. I don't know if I'll try the dark brown at another time, or just keep with this. I seem to recall reading one review where the guy just mixed the two packets of powders together and just used them as a single treatment. I might give that a whirl, although I've seen others say that they didn't need the base after a while. PS, I just rinsed the sink off & cleaned up what I slopped on the counter & saw no staining, like someone suggested. I also saw no staining of my skin and I wound up slopping it on pretty good (with the last application going up the sides to about my nose because I was debating on letting the stubble grow (instead of chopping the beard down between the sideburns & the mustache like I usually do).

After using JFM for 20+ years, something in their formula either changed or something in my skin changed because I went from just a light tingling that went away in an hour, to having blisters, oozy seepage, and crusty scabs. So looked for something different. I first tried another rapid product that came in a can with 2 spouts, and although it wasn't quite as bad as JFM it still left me irritated, so I thought I would give this product a try. I must say, there are no rashes or skin side effects at all for me, only some trial and error and trying different shades to get it right. My first purchase was the regular brown shade, which like others have mentioned, at first leave you nice and green like the green giant. However by the next morning in my experience all the green is gone and a very nice shade of brown is left. Over a few days as you wash your face and shampoo your hair and beard, the regular brown will start to fade into a strawberry reddish hue when you are in the sun. I have found bar soap seems to make this occur faster than using a shampoo for your whole head, although regular shampoos will also start to strip away the color too. I wanted just a darker color than the medium brown color so my next purchase I went with the Dark Brown. I really like that color and it really looks great and totally natural, however like the regular Brown, using soap or shampoo will begin to reveal the underlying natural plant dyes and in the case of the Dark Brown, it actually turns a shade of purple - I guess because of the Indigo leaves as well as whatever the red leaves are in the regular Brown. Again this takes a few days to show up and I actually kind of like the faint shade of purple in the bright sun. I have begun using a color-preserving hair shampoo this week just to see if that makes a difference. A friend who has used some other natural black organic hair dye product says after the black starts to strip away he is left with a royal "Indigo blue" so it makes sense that purple happens with the dark brown which has both indigo as well as whatever the red plant is. It does take a few days for this to happen though so I can definitely live with it, and Ive gotten to where I just slather it not only on my beard but over my crew cut hair and eyebrows as well so that as everything fades everything turns the same shade. I can say prep time is something you should consider. I set aside a full hour on Sunday nights to get ready for the week. I have found much better results using the organic base first as it does strip out the leftover red or purple, and does make the actual dye perform much better and very even. Here is my routine. I find that making the product, whether the organic base first step or the beard dye itself, is to make it kind of thick like ketchup using really hot water. Then I smear it on my beard and moustache like mud - using an old JFM tray and brush, then I cover my entire beard and moustache with a sheet of saran wrap. The mud-like consistency makes the plastic wrap cling on easily, and keeps it from drying out. Next I use the leftover to dab my eyebrows - I don't cover them with plastic - and then what's left after that I just brush on and use my bare hands to smear it all over the rest of my head. I don't put that on very thick and also do not use plastic wrap there either as the thinner hair seems to take the dye easier than the beard. Next I go sit in my chair and play candy crush or watch tv for 30 minutes. Next, I get in the shower and use regular shampoo to wash my whole head and beard then finish the shower normally as well as shave my neck and do any beard shaping with the razor at that time. Next, I dry off including my beard and hair with just a towel, then go back and mix up the actual dark brown dye and repeat the exact same process with the hot water, ketchup like consistency, etc...plaster it on well, cover the beard again with plastic wrap, smear the rest on eyebrows and head, then go sit down again for more tv or games. I have found that the actual dye turns out about the same whether I leave it on a full 30 minutes or as short as 20, but usually by the time I get the beard done and covered, then the eyebrows then my regular hair, if I wait 20 from that time, the beard itself has gotten 25-30 minutes. After 20-30 minutes I hop back in the shower and simply wash it all off and try to only use just a tiny dab of shampoo since everything is clean and you're just wanting to wash it out. Then just rinse the rest of me off and hop out and dry off. My beard, hair, and eyebrows will be a nice shade of dark greenish brown, but by morning its all nice and dark brown and I'm good for the week. I can say the smell reminds me of when you flip the lawnmower over once a year and scrap off all the dead clumps of grass mulch - that earthy mulchy grassy smell - also kind of like a green tea bag - and every night when you take a shower during the week you will smell a hint of it again but not like when you are doing the treatment. I just got the color-saver shampoo this week so I can't say yet if that will have any effect in the color fade, but so far I really like this product and can live with the prep time and slight red or purple color that appears as it fades - just don't use bar soap on your beard as that will make the fade happen faster. An interesting product with this review being of the regular brown or medium brown. My hair color is naturally dark brown to black but I have a little blonde, little red too and it gives me a mostly brown, dark brown beard. I ended up using 3 different shades of this dye. I started with the light brown since I hadn't ever used any kind of hair dye, I'm bald, so my beard is all the hair coloring I would ever need. My biggest reason for trying it is I shaved my beard off in April and started growing it back. I had several small areas of gray that I know are eventually covered by the thicker, darker hair. I wanted to cover that gray up until the darker hair came all the way in. Here's my thoughts on the colors: Light Brown caused more problems for me than I thought it could. It introduced more light brown, red, blonde to my dark beard. So, I bought this medium brown thinking it would cover it up and it did ... some. That led to me buying the black just 3 days later and the black worked best for me. This is what I've noticed, the thickest, coarsest hair in my beard is in the goatee area and the darker shades worked very good in those areas. My sideburns area is a softer hair and the darker worked best. The light brown didn't even dye the softer hair. So, I would say go a shade darker than what you think you need. What I have noticed is the darker washes out quicker. I put it on 3 times in the first two weeks of use. The lighter shades stayed up to 10 days. There's a dilemma but I think the darker is better unless your beard is light. I didn't try the dark brown so I can't say on it. I didn't have any problems with putting it on. I actually like the smell of it as one of my favorite foods is cooked greens and that's what it smells like to me. I did use the base on each application. It is a little time-consuming and I'll share the way I did it. I would put the base on, let it set for 20 minutes, then washed the base off in the sink with a natural soap. I would then put the dye on and let it set for 20-30 minutes. I then rinse it off in the shower. I don't know if others noticed this but my beard feels very soft after rinsing the dye off. But there is some drying out of the beard too. You won't notice it until the next day. I just used some Shea Moisture beard oil to keep the moisture level up. It's a good product overall. It's nice that they send a small package of the base instead of having to buy the base separately. It also comes with an application brush, so all you need is some water and a small bowl to mix it in. I don't think my gray is far enough along to start going to drastic measures of chemical dyes and it makes this Grizzly Dye a very good product for me. The minus 1 star is just because I had to buy three different kits to get the right color. That could seem like my fault but the light brown was more of a blonde/brown, the regular brown was more a light brown. It's possibly those shades also have something to do with the texture of my hair.

When I was a little boy, there used to be this commercial for something that ended with some obnoxious kid saying: “…and it really really works!”. It was one of those catch phrases, that you couldn’t get out of your mind, and became part of our cultural lexicon for a little while, sort of like: “Where’s the beef?”, and “I fell and I can’t get up!” (both of which, by the way have been trademarked!). Anyway, ever since then, in the rare moments when I purchase something and it really does what it says it’s going to do… I find myself repeating that line. And yes, when it came to this herbal beard dye, I found myself shouting it in my bathroom mirror more than once. I have always hated shaving but having fast growth on my face, it was a morning ritual. I also have sensitive skin so went through dozens of different creams, lotions, razors, etc., trying not to deal with an itchy face all day. So recently when I got an assignment that would take me “into the wilds” as they say, I finally was able to live a life-long dream of becoming, at least for a while, the mountain man, Jeremiah Johnson. And what’s a mountain man without a beard? I had one in my youth, ironically since I looked so young I wanted to age myself… and in those days, even though I have brown hair, the beard came out red. There’s lots of red hair folks in my family. It was really kind of cool. So, forgetting that many, many years have gone by since then, I started to let it grow again, and soon discovered that instead of red, I was growing a white Christmas. So, I was less Robert Redford and more Grizzly Adams! I never thought of using hair dye on a beard. There’s just too many horror stories about what those chemicals can do to you. And worse yet are the chemical over-the-counter dyes for beards. Being that the chemicals are in much more contact with your skin, they do much more damage, including many cancer scares. But an old friend, who is a herpetologist and naturalist, told me that there were actually some natural herbs that mixed together can create a harmless oxidation of your hair follicles without any harm to skin or health. She recommend this product. Of course I was dubious, but the price was right, and she assured me that the worst thing that could happen is that it will not work at all, or perhaps give my beard a green tinge, which I could easily shave off. Yes, as other reviewers have said, once you mix the green powder, it does smell a lot like day-old asparagus, or wet lawn clippings that you still have not raked up in your backyard, but hey, that’s a natural smell after all. Not like the toxic smell you get from the other hair dyes, that make you think that any moment a group of Hazmat workers in full helmeted white uniforms will be crashing through your door to “clean up” the “spill” then scrub you within an inch of your life like Karen Silkwood. The instructions are well written, and very simple actually. As the instructions say, since this is a natural herb mixture and not a chemical dye, you don’t see results right away. You leave the stuff on your face to dry for about fifteen minutes, and then wash it off in the shower. No stinging, or any other side effects. The instructions say that it will slowly oxidize and in about a day or so, you will start to see a natural darkening. You can get either brown or black (I got brown). And yes, overnight, I did see that my beard went from “winter wonderland”, to “amber waves of grain”. And as the instructions said, it does continue to darken. But the best part is somehow it doesn’t come off as a Ronald Reagan dye job. It looks totally natural. The coloration is slightly shaded around the beard, and there’s even a slight hit of the natural gray, but it all works to make it look like this is the real beard, and yes, it does shed years off your appearance. You need to redo it every month or so, but again, you’re dealing with lawn shavings here, so what harm is there? Now, here is another bit of news. And again, this may not work for everyone, so be careful. I'm not recommending it, just letting you know my own personal experience... however, I wrote to the company with what I thought was a “silly” question. I have some gray on my head-hair as well, and wondered since this works on a beard, is there any way I could use it on my head-hair as well? I do see there are other “natural” products for that out there, but I just like this stuff, and feel safe with it. They wrote back right away and said, no, it wasn’t a silly question at all, and yes, it will work and is safe to use on your head-hair as well. So, I tried it. Now the mixture for the beard was done thicker, about the consistency of ketchup, but that is too thick to spread evenly and deeply on my head-hair, so I added more water, and made it more the consistence of whole milk. I then wet my hair, and rubbed it through my hair, and then combed it in with a brush as well, to get down to the roots. I kept that in for fifteen minutes, and washed it out in the shower. Again, you may want to test this on a little part of your hair before trying it, since everyone’s hair has different reactions to anything… but in my case, it worked beautifully. I have to admit that I have used the over-the-counter chemical stuff a few times, and I found that it was damaging my hair, but this worked like a conditioner. My hair actually looks and feels thicker, and like the beard, it gives it a very natural darkening, and the gray does disappear. So, okay, men… if you are not brave enough to walk into the outside world with a gray beard… and still want to try and capture a few more years of less-than-middle-age appearance, and also not use the chemical dyes that make you look like someone who wears socks with their sandals, and still carries a fanny-pack… try this. Yes, again: “it really, really works!”

Bottom line: This product works! The story: I had to color my beard for a photo shoot for work. My beard is not long, about 2.5 weeks' worth of growth over established sideburns and a soul patch -- so enough to be able to pull on it but not much hanging down off my face. It had some brown, black and red in it, but mostly had turned white, especially around my chin. I originally bought some JFM but got a bit scared after reading the warning label and about the possible reactions -- swollen eyes? Blisters? I have sensitive skin and started to have second thoughts about using the JFM. I came to Amazon and started reading about this product and figured I'd give it a shot first, and I'm glad I did. How it worked: I followed the directions and used the base first, then the dye. As other reviewers said, pay attention to the amount you use, a little goes a long way. If you have a long beard you'll need the full "dose"; for me, I probably used 3/4 of what I mixed. But the price is good enough that you shouldn't be scared about having too much mix, you can just slather it on, since it's natural! Pay attention to the consistency, mix it like a good thick ketchup or else it'll drip, and while it doesn't stain the sink or anything, it can be messy. I left the base on for 30 minutes, washed my face well and then did the dye, and I let that sit for 45 minutes (the instructions say 30 but I read some reviews that said longer is fine, so I left it in a little extra). I found washing off the base to be messy, so I washed off the dye in the shower, much easier not having to worry about splashing green water everywhere. Right after I washed off the dye I saw color! There was a greenish-brown tint on parts of it, mostly around where the most white had been. (I used the dark brown formula.) But within an hour that started to fade and it became more brown. Within a few hours the green was gone, and by morning, there was no green at all and some of my natural highlights actually came back through, making it look much more natural, at least for me. Smell: Not bad at all. Smells like cut grass while it's on your face. Cleanup: Washes right off the sink and your skin. I could have been more careful putting it on, but the instructions said to put it on quickly before the mix gets cold (you use warm/hot water) so I was a bit messy. I have yet to see if it washes out of the towel I used when cleaning off the base, but I'm not too worried as it's organic. Final thoughts: The only "negative" thing I can think to say is that I'm under the impression that this color will not last as long as a JFM or chemical dye, but that's fine by me. Now that I know how to use it, even if I do this every couple of weeks, it's a much better option in my opinion, for the peace of mind of using a natural product. I also like how the instructions mention that you can mix and match the colors to get various shades. I may get some light brown and mix that, just to see how it looks. To be honest, it's such a difference that I'm still not used to how I look with the same beard color I had 15 years ago, I got so used to all the gray that I feel like I look "different" ... but my wife likes it, and we all know that's a good thing. Plus, she got to take a bunch of cellphone pics of me with a green mud beard while I was doing it, so she had some fun with it, too. Honestly, you can't go wrong with this product, given the huge benefit of there being no harsh chemicals, that's well worth the price. It cost me about the same as JFM, anyway, because I know I'll get at least one if not two more uses out of this pouch. And, if you do experience problems with the color, if you turn green and it won't go away, or whatever: Honestly, it's hair. Shave it off and it will grow back and then you can try something else. But for someone like me who doesn't like the idea of chemicals on my skin, this stuff is great!

Overall, I am happy with the results of dyeing my beard with this product and I do plan on using again in the future. In the distant past I tried Just For Men and ended up with horrible chemical burns and blisters. JFM was horrendous and I had to shave my beard to help my face heal so I was looking for a natural option. I looked up the ingredients in this dye and they are all just ground up plants. After using, I have had no skin irritation at all . At this point I have used this dye three times. I use a mix of the brown and dark brown about 50/50. The first time was a little difficult because the instructions are pretty squishy …there are two powders in the package, one is Base and the other is Dye. The Base is supposed to be for prepare the beard follicles to receive the dye and then the dye is to make it darker. The base itself adds color to begin with then the dye amps it up. Ok, the first application definitely turned my beard …not exactly St Patricks day green but pretty embarrassingly green for a couple of days, after that it eventually faded to dark. In the first few days I filled up with two more applications to get the shade I wanted. I originally only used brown but added dark brown after. Subsequent applications have a little green tint but almost not noticeable. I would probably go to work with the color but would advise against a wedding or a first date or anything like that until it oxidized for a day or two. After tinkering around a bit, I got it to a color that I can live with. It does fade / leg grey come through as you wash it over several days but to me it kind of looks natural…it sort of matches the salt and pepper of my hair so I don’t mind. I think it would be very difficult to get a uniform color over a coarse beard like mine but I didn’t really want that anyway. It is seeming like this is a process that needs to be done about once a week to keep a good color and to get the grey roots. I have a fairly slow growing beard so your mileage may vary. I have found that just a little over a teaspoon is plenty to do my beard to a package should last a long time(you’ll probably run out of base first). My only real complaint is the directions kind of suck. They make the base seem optional while the company makes it seem like you should always use it. The company gives no phone number…which REALY sucks for a product that changes the color of your face! So that’s definitely worth one star off. Then they state that all customer service emails will be answered within 24 hrs…it took them until a third day to get back with me. Then they gave some instructions that are found in another reviewers post in Amazons reviews and they link to ridiculous video they is IN SPANISH of some hairdresser doing a guys beard. The info is there but man, could they not take an hour to make their own video and have it in English? It seems like a two hour project that would cost $0. I have used the product for a few weeks and I could make way better instructions in an afternoon. TLDR- I actually like the product (after the green turns to brown) but the company sucks and you are pretty much in your own to wade through Amazon reviews to figure out how to use it. Once you figure it out it’s pretty easy

I have also been burned by just for men products. Used and loved for a year or so until one day it started burning me and it was so itchy it would wake me up for nights in a row. So the idea of this product saving the day got me very excited. However, it did not work for me at all. I followed the instructions as well as some suggestions found in the comments here, but the best I could get from the dark brown dye was more of a dirty blonde. My beard is not course, but I did use the conditioner, per the instructions for course beards after the first application of dye did not work, and it did not help. I tried leaving the dye in for a longer period of time, tried using the conditioner first and then the dye, also tried combining the conditioner and the die at the same time, and tried wrapping my beard and plastic wrap to keep the mixture wet while it set, but none of this made any difference. I considered buying a black dye to try to get the color to match, but due to the relatively high cost, lack of success with dark brown, and especially the smell, I have decided against this. I would describe the smell as similar to a cow pasture. It’s natural, grassy, and in my opinion not pleasing at all. The scent comes out anytime you get your beard wet, not just when applying the dye. So every time you wash your face, take a shower, or in the summertime get wet in a pool, your beard starts to smell. I really did not like this smell, so I actually had some reluctance at times to wash my face when otherwise I would have. The smell transfers to your towels which makes an entire bathroom smell like cut wet grass. I have decided to go back to just for men. I slide a thin comb along my skin at the base of the hair follicles, protecting my skin from the product and just die the top of the hair. This leaves about an eighth of an inch of silver at the base of my beard, but if my beard is long enough it lies down on itself and you cannot see the silver underneath. I am much happier doing this, and it does look much better. Best of all I don’t have to smell the henna anymore. Good luck!

Just my two cents... 1.) I keep my beard pretty clean, so aside from washing after a big workout, or somesuch, did not need to worry about soaping good before application. 2.) The instructions on the ' brown' dye are for two heaping tablespoons, but I think that's too much. I have a thick beard, and I think that one heaping tablespoon is probably enough. If you have a long beard, go two tablespoons. As soon as you add water it expands greatly, and two tablespoons of powder is just too much for even a think, shorter-ish beard. Add some warm water ( a female friend that colors her hair recommends using warm coffee or espresso, as somehow that fixes color better, but I did not do this), and mix to consistency of ketchup. No problem! Smear on beard... If you put it on thick it will drip, even at ketchup consistency. Don't worry, smear on skin around beard should not stain skin - did not on me. Smell? I love green tea, so no big whoop at all. It smells like green tea, so smell is simply NOT an issue. 3.) I allowed for 30 minutes the first time I tried this and I think it worked nicely! That was several weeks ago, as I got busy and could not mess around with it and had to shelve it until last night, a Friday night. 4.) I ended up trying again a second time just yesterday ( Friday night), and let it the dye ' burn in' for 20 minutes and I'm really happy with the results! There is a *slight* green hue that I have noticed has gone away a bit since I first applied 24 hours ago, and the brown has darkened a slight bit too, just like the directions indicate. 5.) I'm still on the fence. Here's why: I am a pre-mature greyed out beard, and my head hair is not far behind. It's a bummer, but it's the hand some of us are dealt. I was lucky, in my family grey sets in in the mid-20's, but I was lucky to get to 36 before any grey. But that said, it came in on my beard with a vengeance! Bummer for me.. It used to be dark dark brown, now it's mostly grey... Maybe I'm just not used to the brown color I chose - a light brown - and I'll get used to it. I *almost* like the grey more... As I get more time this winter I'll try again and see what I think. I need to re-order another batch, which I'll certainly do, and go from there. Last thing, this is an awesome product and deserves our support. I say that because this is an all-natural beard dye, not chemical CRAP. I believe the older way of doing things is the better, that returning to simpler, organic, non-GMO, ways at every chance we have is better. I know some agree, and some will not. I've used ' the other options' and they look like mud. This product naturally offers variation in color, which is genius. It's not even engineered that way, it's just how it is and it makes sense. I'm looking forward to figuring out if this is for me or not. If so, then great. If not, then I'll strive to be the best Gandalf that I can be, lol... All in all I'm very happy with this product! Give it a try. You won't be sorry because it will either work for you and you can continue using it, or it will not be what you want, and you can carry on to where you think you should be with it all.
