This feature serves to accomplish two things better than a traditional flat cutting board
I bought this as a companion to my purchase of the 8" Ulu Knife and based on other reviews which suggested the full benefits of the Ulu Knife would not be realized without it. Those reviews were spot on. I have reviewed the knife separately, so will only focus on the specially designed cutting board here. The cutting board is perfectly designed to maximize the unique curved design of the Ulu Knife and keeps whatever you are chopping or mincing within a confined area. This feature serves to accomplish two things better than a traditional flat cutting board: 1) the chopping mincing, slicing you are doing gets done faster, and 2) you are able to achieve a much finer and smaller degree of chop, slice or mince than working on a flat service. The reason for this is that whatever you are working on is constantly being moved downward to a center point of the cutting process/action. Therefore, each cutting stroke you make is interacting with more of whatever it is you are cutting. I have never minced garlic, parsley, celery or onions so quickly or in such finer portions with any other cutting board or knife. I actually got the Ulu Knife and this cutting board for a specific reason: I have to chop up poached chicken every few days to feed my two small dogs who are on a special diet. The poached chicken needs to be chopped to a small size and uniformly so I can mix it easily with the rest of their food. Before I got this cutting board and the Ulu Knife it was quite a chore to chop poached chicken on a flat cutting board with chef's knife to a uniform size. It was a time-consuming task and hard to get the pieces a uniform size. This cutting board and the Ulu Knife though make short work of this job and the portion sizes come out uniform. I made chicken salad this week and it worked great for that. It is worth the money and a must to go along with the 8" Ulu Knife.

A must for Ulu knives
I had previously bought an Ulu knife to shape my cigar wrappers but retired it for that purpose since I chose to work with a traditional chaveta knife. I learned about ulu specific chopping board only recentlywhen I was viewing ulu knives on YouTube. As we are in the process of gathering stuff for our (first) RV, it dawned on me that this board and my old Ulu knife would be a great combination for it's kitchen. On getting the board, I tried chopping some onions, tomatoes and cilantro; excellent results. Also I didn't have to worry about stuff flying off the board. It was also easy to clean which is always a relief. I am very happy on buying it.

ULU knife,
We recently visited the ULU factory in Alaska and had a custom ULU knife made. I ordered the ULU cutting board from Amazon and it is exactly what they made at the factory. It's wonderful. Exactly what you can purchase at the factory. I love it!

Perfect for use with the Alaskan Ulu knife
I really like this bowl for making chop salads and the Alaskan Ulu knife works well with this bowl because the blade of the knife rocks perfectly from one side of the bowl to the opposite side so you never have to move the knife from contact with the bowl while chopping. There is also a flat side to chop on but I have never used it. Just make sure you keep it oiled and reapply the oil after you clean the bowl with water and detergent, otherwise the wood will dry out and crack. The company recommends mineral oil, but I use olive or sesame oil since I am chopping food on it! I only gave it 4 stars because I feel it is overpriced for the size of the bowl.

I have received the bowl and I must report that . . .
... while the dark stripes are walnut, the light wood is not birch. It's one of many varieties of tropical mahogany-type woods that much of the high production furniture is made of then, normally, stained to be the color of the wood the manufacturers claim it to be. The light-colored wood is not from the US. Also, the inside of the bowl is not rough as some have reported. It actually looks a feels very nice.

I have been looking for a chopping bowl as I had in my house growing up. This was close
used it once already, it worked just fine. I was worried that it might not be deep enough, but if you don't try to chop too much at a time, that isn't a problem.

Beautiful wooden bowl
Loved the quality and workmanship of the bowl. It's beautiful. I just wish it was a bit deeper.

Chopping on this board rocks!
It fits my ulu blade perfectly and keeps my chopping in the board instead of on the counter.
