This is the perfect starting point for a new Superman reader. Each character is reintroduced for the first time after Crisis on Infinite Earths cleaned the slate for DC. We also get to meet new characters such as Cat Grant, Professor Hamilton and Bibbo for the first time. For a more in-depth reading experience, I highly recommend reading John Byrne’s ‘The World of Krypton’ after reading this book. Review: One of the best Superman comic runs in DC history - As I'm sure fellow longtime Superman fans will agree, it is a rare thing to find an excellent run of Superman comics by the same author. There are many great one off stories, but many authors struggle to know how to write Superman. Many just can't seem to find actual threats for the Man of Steel to face, and end up writing a boring one-dimensional character flying around and punching things. Enter John Byrne. As the Man of Steel 6 issue mini series rebooted the Superman continuity, Byrne was able to reinvent Superman a little. He seems a little more sure of himself than past incarnations, and not quite as powerful, helping Byrne craft more suspense than previously found in Superman comics. Simply put, this is an excellent collection of one of the best Superman runs in DC comics history, it shows a vulnerable yet capable Man of Steel, with interesting and layered villains. Byrne's art is also fantastic, and still stands out all these years later. It's nice to see that a great writer/artist actually stuck with Supes for a significant amount of time, and we finally have an omnibus to prove it.

NOT the Omnibus!!!! Less the Half! But still great stories and art!
The best Era of Superman! The era known as the “Byrne Era: 1986-2000” is the era of Superman I grew up with so buying this was a no brainer. But the advertising is false!!! This is NOT the Omnibus as advertised! This collects basically the first two original trade paperbacks into one hardcover! So that was a BIG disappointment. Hopefully the remaining volumes will be collected and even more so for the stories set after EXILE. It wouldve been nice to have this as an Omnibus next to the Exile and Death and Return of Superman Omnibuses.

Beautiful book
This is a wonderfully illustrated book of Superman tales that are wholesome and well-written. It’s nice to see Classic Superman acting true to his Boy Scout nature. He is nice to everyone and genuinely gives it his all to make the world a better place. Another great thing about this book are the thoughts going on in Clark’s head. He really thinks things through and can be quite introspective at times, which adds more depth to his character and makes him more believable. The character dialogues are also witty, refreshing, and differ from person to person. Despite how cheerful and optimistic Superman is, there are high stakes in a number of the stories, and the threats come across as very realistic and believable. This is definitely one of the best Superman collections to own.

Superman: The Man of Steel Vol. 1 Collection A Great Start To Superman's New Era
I just finished reading Superman: The Man of Steel Vol. 1 by John Byrne, Marv Wolfman, and Jerry Ordway and this is a wonderful beginning to DC'S Superman post-Crisis On Infinite Earths era. This collection collects 18 issues from the beginning of Superman's late-1980s reboot. I have read the original Man Of Steel miniseries from the 1980s 3 times now in my life. I read it as it was originally being published back in the '80s when I was only 7 and 8 years old, once in 2010 at the age of 30, and I just did my third re-read of it just now in 2025 at the age of 46. The Man Of Steel miniseries has held up over time and I dare say that that story could be considered a timeless classic 💖 for Superman. Or you might even go so far as to call the Man Of Steel miniseries an evergreen because it really does seem to hold up even after nearly 40 years since it was originally published. The artwork in these stories is just absolutely gorgeous to look at 😍💖! What can I say about John Byrne that hasn't already been said about him? He's a legend and he was at the top of his game when he was writing and drawing Superman and Action Comics back in the '80s. Jerry Ordway's artwork is just so lifelike and absolutely stunning 😍💖 to look at as well. The rest of the stories in this collection besides the Man Of Steel miniseries were all great fun to read. The majority of the stories collected in this collection were all first reads for me. So it made this book even more enjoyable for me because I was reading these stories for the first time. I also learned something new about the character redesign for Lex Luthor in this book. I had no idea that Marv Wolfman intended for the 1980s-version of Lex Luthor to be modeled after Charles Foster Kane, Citizen Kane himself, and Jerry Ordway spilt this bit of tea about Lex in his introduction to another collected edition of the Man Of Steel that is included at the end of this book. That does make sense though and I can see that with Lex now acting like Citizen Kane but he's not because he's an evil criminal genius and everything is just for his benefit and nobody elses. Anyways I think everybody who loves comics or DC should read this book. And if you're a Superman fan and haven't read this, well, then what are you waiting for 🙂? Pick it up now and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime 💖💗🙂🇺🇸. Ciao, baby😄☕👋!

This is great!
Far out! Volumes 1 & 2 of the Superman: Man od Steel trade paperbacks, in one volume, hardbound, with the extra biographical information. 460-plus pages of super goodness, old school Superman. Great nostalgia for those fans who were there when the Crisi took place and saw the "rebirth' of the DCU (well the first rebirth, anyway). Great art, great storylines and cool late-80's fashions. Easy to read on no glossy paper, light to hold onto so you can read it for a long time (as I did, having just gotten it today) and totally worth it. Trade up from your paperback or digital copies. Grab some M&M's or snack food of your choice (preferably the kind that wont leave fingerprints on the pages) and enjoy!

I remember reading the original comics way back when. This brought back a lot of happy memories. John Byrne is one of the greatest writer/artists in my book and he brought his own style to this reboot I can’t wait to pick up the next two volumes.

I’m so glad to finally have this collection in my hands. Having grown up reading John Byrne’s run, this version of Superman is "my" Superman. While modern takes like Birthright or Secret Origin have their fans, for me, this remains the definitive origin story. The book arrived in perfect condition—packaging was secure and delivery was incredibly fast. Seeing these stories collected together brings back so many memories. If you want to see the Man of Steel at his best, this is the volume to get. Highly recommended for long-time fans and new readers alike!
