A gripping tale that is as thoroughly relevant today as it was 500 years ago. I was unaware until now that the Chinese had been using smoked quartz spectacles as sunglasses one thousand years ago.

The book showing the indiscretions of the rich who can does basically buy any woman with his rich gifts and attention; but his attention span with one woman doesn't last long before he is on to another.

This is an amazing read. The story itself is fundamentally simple. The life of a a man and his wives, concubines, party girls and his avarice. The big challenge is keeping pace with the huge number of characters. But it is worth it. The conniving, duplicity, disloyalty all make for a wide range of truly interesting stories within the main plot.
