The Age of Shadows [DVD] [2017]

Better ride than Train to Busan
This movie is a joy to watch in spite of its imperfections - reliance of too many coincidences and the evasion of the fatal bullet in the many mass firing scenes. It is riveting because the plot revolves around spies and counter-spies, betrayals from both sides, the pro-Japanese and the Korean resistance fighters - and we are strung along until almost the end of the movie when the turncoats are revealed. And so we think the story has ended. It has not. The cinematography is superb, and that alone is enough to keep you in your seat, popcorn in hand. There is graphic violence, so may not be suitable for the very young.

better than most Hollywood action movies.
I watched the film by clicking on ENGLISH. The dubbing was excellent. I seemed that the actors were actually speaking in English rather thanKorean. I don`t know what the negative reviewers were watching, but it apparently was not the same disc I had. I liked the film somuch (a library copy ) that I watched it twice and then I bought it on line

Gong Yoo and Song Kang-Ho are acting giants!
Excellent acting, intense suspense, one of the best spy thrillers I've seen in a long time. Highly recommended!

Excellent acting from Song Kang-Ho and Gong Yoo
Excellent acting from Song Kang-Ho and Gong Yoo, good historical plot, thrilling action. This film made me interested to learn more about Japan's conflict with Korea and China during this period. Viewed on Instant Video, subtitles appeared to be well-coordinated throughout.

Based on real events.
Subs are fine now. Great acting, sets, costume, direction. Without Korean resistance in the period before WW2, it is quite possible that China would have fallen and a full scale invasion of India by Japanesetroops might have followed. A fascinating part of history that shaped modern Asia.

Dubbed in 1920s style English - horrible
Couldn't get past the dubbed English. would much rather hear Chinese and have subtitles.

True and Touching
I've watched so many TVs and movies on themes of Sino-Japanese war, spy, resistance etc but the Age of Shadows is nothing I've seen before. It truly touched me. Gong Yoo and Song Hang-Ho are unbelievable actors.

Just misses the mark somehow....
I love Kim Jee-woon as he directed The Good, The Bad and The Weird, one of my first and favourite Korean movies, and A Bitter Sweet Life which is just brilliant. I found A Tale of Two Sisters interesting, and I Saw the Devil profoundly disturbing. This one The Age of Shadows is a tremendously well produced, acted, and directed piece of film making, but I really struggled to get into it. The story at first appears complex but actually turns out to be pretty straightforward, there are some impressive set pieces, but the film as a whole just failed to engage me and although nominated for various awards I would venture is not one of Mr Kim's stand-outs in the way the other aforementioned films were. Worth a watch to appreciate a craftsman at work, but ultimately not completely satisfying.

Slow start but improves.
A slow burner of a film. It is quite slow to begin with, but it gains momentum and is well worth watching as the tension builds to a good climax. Excellent acting, composition and direction. Very atmospheric. Worth buying. RJC.
