Cats really like it; just enough warmth to keep cats happy
I leave my house at 63ºF. I have an older cat who is getting skinny and I decided that a heated bed might help her. She's on meds that suppress her immune system and I don't want her to catch a cold... or worse. She will sleep in cat beds so after reading the great reviews about this one, I decided to purchase it.As others have pointed out, it is a nice bed. It has zippers so you can remove the heater and clean the bed. It's soft, too. It's hardly warm without a cat laying on it. If your cat lays on it long enough, it will feel warmer. I don't really know what to expect from 4 watt heater. Perhaps with the high sides and a cat sitting on the heater, the heat is localized and doesn't escape, which provides a stable temperature for long term use. My cat has been spending time in this bed rather than on the bed near me. A friend has one of these for his outdoor partially inside cat and his cat prefers the heated bed to unheated.I also bought a self-warming mat for $11. It's mylar between two pieces of materia. That DOES work to keep heat in. It's like one of those light weight emergency camping "blankets". I put the mat on my lap and it warmed up my lap. Buy (or make!) a couple of those too. No electricity needed.Update after three years: I have TWO of these beds. My old cat used the heated bed all summer this year. It has gotten chilly enough that my other old cat has started using the bed. I have had no trouble with these beds. The best money I ever spent on beds; several co-workers have purchased this bed for cats and it is a hit with all of them.I originally gave this two stars. But after seeing how much my cats like it, I am now giving it four stars. My older cat spends a lot of time in the bed and her sneezing has stopped (for now). I have been spot checking the temp beneath the cats and it feels pretty warm. I think the heat level is just about right for a cat to spend hours sleeping in the bed without getting too warm. I think the key here that you want just the right temp to match the body heat of the cat and this bed seems to do that pretty well.Feb 2016 update: The two beds I purchased still look great and work. A couple of years ago, my 17 year old started using the bed year round so it does not get unplugged during the summer. My other cat got sick and became incontinent and I used puppy pads to cover the pillow. After he passed, I took the bed apart and cleaned with Nature's Miracle and hand washed in warm water with laundry detergent and they look like new again! The pillow is still fluffy and has held up well. I would give this 6 stars!October 30 2018 update. Well, the second of two cats who used these beds has passed. These two beds were on year round for at least the last five years. Excellent bed, and the price hasn't gone up. The 16" bed will hold a 20 pound cat easily.

Great for any cat/kitten that needs a little help keeping warm
I recently acquired a little Cornish Rex kitten just over 2 lbs of about 4 months of age. Most cats have three hair types: guard outer hair, awn, and down hair. The Cornish Rex only has their down and tend to need a little extra help with keeping their body heat up during the winter. As soon as I knew I was getting little "Beatrice" I did some research on heated cat beds. This one won me over for several points.1. With the voltage it can be safely left on 24 hours a day. The voltage is low enough that the cost is minimal and unnoticeable to any electric bills. I'm one of those people that unplugs their hair dryer after using it, so the safety of the cat bed was of utmost importance. The cord is also long enough that I can keep it slightly away from the wall just to ease my mind a little bit more.2. I read on here that it doesn't get warm enough. It does truly get a comfortable warm, any more so and I'd be worried that it would be irritating to the cat's skin or coat. An example of how warm it is can be that when I get home from work and my little cat hears me and greets me at the door, I can tell she was in the bed a minute ago by touching the bed. It works best when there is some sort of pressure on it, it doesn't really feel warm unless something is pressing against the bed part be it a cat or even a small blanket.3. The price is reasonable and the cover is removable so it can be washed. I didn't want to get a heated cat bed that would after time be unusable because of getting dirty. There are also some great color options depending on your style. I went with the sage green which is pretty neutral in tones, but I see you can get different patterned pieces.I was lucky enough to get her interested in this bed while young. I know cats can be finicky, but for a Cornish Rex this is a great purchase. The first day she sniffed it and didn't pay attention to it which makes me think the chemical smell of the bag it arrived in was off putting. A couple days later and when I'm not giving her enough lap time she's on it like a magnet. Well worth the small amount of money, I encourage a purchase!

This product is close to perfect. *UPDATED review after 6 years of use*
I have three cats (one is VERY big) and they all love this. I had a heated cat bed kind of like this (slightly larger with faux sheepskin cover) that finally gave up the ghost (they used it to death), so I went looking for a replacement. I looked for a while before finding this, and I am so glad I bought it. Things to note(1) One of my cats was in the thing before I even plugged it in. I took it out of the package, set it on the floor and turned to plug it in, turned back and she was curling up and happy.(2) The high sides are sturdy (great chin rest) - this design is great.(3) It is smaller than the one I had before but even my monster cat (20+ lbs) gets in it, no problem! He is curled up in it now.(4) The microsuede cover is a lot easier to get pet hair out of than the faux-sheepskin one I had before.(5) I love the "cat-activated" heating pad - warm until a cat gets in, then it warms up more.(6) I bought two and will be buying a third, no doubt about it.I buy a lot of stuff for my cats that they just couldn't care less about. This is a raving success and the cats obviously love it. All three of them (and they are all very different cats) give it a big paws' up.*UPDATE July 2015, after 6 years of use* - Still a fav with the cats . I take the heating element out in summer and put it back in when the temps fall in autumn. All the cats like it and now I have a little dog who gets in it sometimes too! It's been washed many times and comes out looking pretty much like new. (It may not be possible to get every single cat hair off it at this point, but that's true of about everything in the house, isn't it.)I still highly, highly recommend this if you are looking for an attractive heated cat bed that can be machine washed and stand up to YEARS of occupancy.
