I had an old style hood on my tank that broke. Can i use this instead of replacing the hood? I still have the glass top.

Hi, Yes it sits on the edge of the tank on each side so it will work and you will love how well it lights up your tank over the old style of lights. We swapped out all are old light to these on all 6 of our tanks

Can you just have one color at a time? like only blue?

No. This is a full spectrum light which means all colors work together to give a light that's somewhat clear in nature. There is an on/off switch and there's no way to adjust the light for just one color.

What size would be good for a 29 gallon bow front?

measure across the top center of your tank, get that length or shorter

Is this good lighting for plants too?

Yes, I believe so. I have begun to have issues with algae blooms in my tank.
