Can you use your own designs?

Yes, you can use the design space software to customise things and you can import images and svgs.

Do you need to buy other items to use this machine, and do you need to buy special card, vinyl, stickers etc from cricut ?

As others have said, this machine has its own special materials that are designed for use with it, however you can also use your own materials such as paper, card and vinyl by using a mat. You get a small mat with the machine and there is a longer one available for purchase separately. You just cut your material to size and place on the sticky side of the mat. The advantage of the special materials is that you can make slightly wider designs and much much longer ones too. They have their own range of pens (I have some of the glitter gel pens and they are really lovely) but it is actually possible to use a whole load more pens with a bit of fiddling to make sure the tip is at the correct height. I have used the bullet tip on Tombow brush pens just fine. The one thing that I would recommend getting is the card mat. It allows you to attach a pre-folded card and keeps the back protected so that the design is cut only on the front.

Can you make sticker sheets with this?

Yes, the Cricut has a sticker kiss cut feature, you would need to ensure you have the correct paper for stickers.

Is it worth the investment to start a small business? I want to make tote bags, vinyl stickers, custom clothing, cards, buntings.. it’s all new to me

The joys is fine for card making & labels, stickers etc, if you’re looking at doing clothes, bags go for the maker.
