Finally, a product offering customers a cost effective and easy way to detect air conditioning oil levels and harmful acids in the oil a/c system without removing complete A/C system and draining of all oil from system. Many A/C compressor failures are caused by low oil levels and dirty contaminated oil in the A/C system. The use of this low-cost oil checker can save you the cost of a new compressor plus down time caused by the replacement of a compressor. Automotive and commercial installers can use existing service fittings to utilize the Pittstop Oil Checker. Oil Checkers are available in 2 and 10 packs. Also available for R12. Directions Operate the A/C unit for 15-20 minutes. Put the oil checker between your thumb, index finger and middle finger and with the A/C compressor running, push down on the low pressure (suction line)(this is normally the big A/C line) 2 or 3 times. Set the checker tube upright for 3-5 minutes then pick up the checker and check the oil level. If the tube is 1/2 or more full, DO NOT add oil to the system. If the checker is below 1/2 full, add oil to your system. This checker is a 1 time use only item. Note: The compressor clutch must be engaged or running to get the correct reading. Review: A/c oil testers - As described Review: May not work in Modern AC systems - It is a good product overall. I cannot confirm this, but in modern AC systems, which use almost half the amount of oil as the earlier systems it may not draw enough oil to be able to measure oil quantity. About 15 years ago, auto manufacturers went from approx 8 oz of oil to 4.75 oz. Oil does not circulate nearly as much. Most just sits in compressor

DIY helper
I haven’t had a chance to use yet. But my friend put a new air compressor in his car and he used the product to measure how much oil he had left in his system after a loss of refrigerant from a leak. He recharged but didn’t know how much oil was left in the system, using this product he got in the ball park and has no problems so far with his system (8 months). When you don’t have a evac. Machine to measure oil with yr vacuum pump it becomes complicated and u don’t want to run low oil n yr new air compressure. So I would say they work

Legit?
Tried on two cars. The oil is basically clear so it’s not really useful unless your oil is really bad. Probably better off with a screw driver and a paper towel to get the color of the oil…

If the oil gets low from a leak the compressor will fail
Many people don’t realize that simply adding more refrigerant to an air conditioning system in an automobile will solve the problem and somehow make it better forever but if you have a substantial leak in the system and it’s losing coolant you’re also losing lubrication for the compressor and the rest of the AC system it is very important to make sure you have adequate oil in the correct oil in the system so that the compressor will not fail due to lack of lubrication. Remember when you lose Refrigerant you lose lubricating oil also so always check to see how much oil you have left before it fails the compressor.

Good to verify oil quantity/condition
This worked well without having to totally drain and flush the system to verify correct oil quantity. Oil color was good but I had to add 4 oz to bring my system up to speed. Used amazons oil injector to add the oil without draining the system. Happy customer.
