Great quality blanks
I used these to make scales for a kitchen kinfe and they came out great. The grain on both pieces as nice, and they were a uniform size. This is a hard wood, so be prepared to spend some time shaping it. I used a course belt on my grinder and it worked great, then polished them up with 100-120-180-220-400 grit hand sanding.

Not what I wanted
The wood is "Golden Ebony". It is not totally black like I understood the ad to be. It is beautiful wood and I will try to make it work, but I wanted "black" ebony...no color in the grain.

Dense, hard, minimal grain, mostly black, polishes like metal
This “ebony” is a super tough wood that sands and polishes to a nice soft glowing shine on a buffing wheel, almost like metal when properly prepped.I refurbished a small but very heavy Japanese Deba knife that had a traditional Wa handle. I’ve got really big hands and traditional Japanese Wa handles feel like a toothbrush to me - I just don’t like them. This Blackwood/Ebony became an accent handle “bolster” with American walnut used for the rest of the handle.I removed the original handle from the vintage Deba knife and crafted a new handle in more of a Western style that better fits my gorilla hand.I’m not totally sure if it’s truly Blackwood which is actually in the Rosewood family or Macassar ebony.Either way, this wood is tough as a soft metal. It’s hard on hand tools, it even tough to sand and file and it takes shine from polishing like metal.I attached 3 photos. One of which shows the handle in rough, rectangular form and the other two showing this ebony on the nearly finished handle.I slimmed the handle down a bit after this photo and made it for my right hand with some sanding tricks. After shaping, I progressively sanded the handle to 1000 grit with a final polishing on a buffing wheel. The results were exactly what I wanted. A super tough and subtly slick look handle accent that can take beating working on shellfish and other tough kitchen work - that’s what a Deba is for.Bottom line is that this wood is beautiful, tough, hard, inexpensive, a beast to work and shape but will give beautiful results. Hope that helps!

Nice enough but came with gouges
Nice wood. Really hard and dark but, it came with a few gouges in it which impacted the aesthetic of my final product. I should have gone to a brick and mortar store to buy this.
