Surprisingly Comfortable – A Game Changer for My Back and Posture
I never knew a flat, firm mat like this could be so comfortable. Since I started using it daily, I've noticed a real improvement in my posture and back. I originally got it to try something different, but now I find myself watching movies on it all the time. I use a simple pillow to elevate my neck slightly, and honestly, I’ve fallen asleep on it more than a few times—it's that relaxing. The construction feels solid and built to last, and it’s the perfect size for stretching out. I highly recommend this mat if you prefer a firmer surface to lay on or even nap. It’s been a great addition to my routine, and I’m really happy with the purchase.

Great!
Smells like sweet, sweet tatami! Made sleeping on my futon so much more comfortable, its the perfect size for one person and folds really nice! The tatami weave is pretty nice as well! Great value for the money.

The smell
Pretty good product, I had some back problems so I decided to go with this and a futon, best purchase ever, the only problem is that this product smells like a dead rat besides that everything is good.

Just like Japan!
We purchased these for our home for a few reasons, the most important of which is my wife's back problems. We changed over from a memory foam mattress to a shikibuton and tatami mats and it has made a world of difference in pain relief for both of us. We also are downsizing our living space, so having a sleeping arrangement that can be cleaned up and put away in the mornings is great. It helps with keeping the living space neat and clean and helps with allergies (keeps pets off the bed). Lastly, we having changed to this bedding type to prepare for a move to rural japan where this is the common sleeping arrangement. We got very used to them during our trips to Japan, so the shock of (essentially) sleeping on the floor wore off long ago for us. If you've never been to Japan or tried this style of bedding, it can be a little uncomfortable at first, but the pros definitely outweigh any cons.Overall we love these mats and highly recommend them if you're facing any of the same issues we were.

Sturdy enough but smelly as hell
It is light and sturdy at the same time; however, I have left it outside for a week now and the disturbing smell is not getting any less. I am starting to think the smell is there to stay. Please let me know if I am wrong.

Few months in review
My husband and I both recently started having back pain. Did some research and this style bed was recommended to relieve that pain. Ordered the mat and one of the shikibuton mattresses and have had little to none since then. This mat is exactly as pictured. Some of the reviewers noticed a funky smell, I agree with that it does have a smell just like any new mattress or furniture. It eventually went away. We did leave it outside in the sun a few times which I believe helped. Have had this since May and still happy with our purchase.

Wrong items were sent for half of the order!!!
We received the order. We ordered a total of 4 tatami mats ($139 each). They arrived in two separate boxes. Two of the mats are completely different from the order. We are very very very disappointed. See pictures attached. The color is brown instead of green; the material is like plastic and not (igusa) rush grass; NO smelling or aroma of (igusa) rush grass; the patterns/designs look very cheap and not looking like traditional tatami mat at all!NOT as expected and advertised.
