Disturbing pictures for young children
Great idea/storyline, nice hardcover, cute pictures of Henrietta writing. However, I’m a bit disappointed in the pictures “Emily” drew. I really like the other Toon Into Reading books. I think the illustrator went a bit overboard and did not consider age-appropriateness; it would have been better if the illustrations were kind of comical-scary and how kids would draw monsters, etc. The illustrated Emily reminds me of Chucky the doll and the monsters and mouse are pretty intense . The illustrations would disturb young children and encourage night terrors. The hardcover and binding and quality of illustrations, however, deserve some credit.

and it looked perfect. However
I bought this for my daughter for Christmas because she loves to craft, write, anything creative, and it looked perfect. However, I found the pictures and story a little scary. I'm keeping it, but I was considering so many great books that I'm kind of disappointed in myself for choosing this one.

Portrait of the Artist as a Kid: TOON's Written and Drawn by Henrietta
I can’t say it often enough: I love TOON Books. They consistently put out fun, smart content for kids of all ages and tastes. I love having them in my home, I love having them in my libraries, I love that they exist. One of the books they’re putting out this Fall, Written and Drawn by Henrietta, by 2014 Eisner nominee, Liniers, is likely to be one of my favorite books of the year. Let’s discuss.Henrietta is ready to write a book – a scary one about a monster with three heads and two hats. With her faithful cat nearby to provide guidance, we see the creative process at work as Henrietta weaves her tale of adventure. What’s so great about this story is that, while considered a TOON Level 3 – ages 5 and up – this is a book that works great for storytime for younger kids, too. I read this to my 3 year-old, and he loved it! The pictures are bright, simply rendered, and Henrietta’s drawings look like a kid really drew them. The storytelling is fun and in the first person, allowing any reader to insert himself or herself into Henrietta’s spot. This book is the perfect jumping-off point to get your own kids drawing and telling their own stories – it’s exactly what my little guy and I did when I was done reading this one to him.

Absolutely wonderful! Completely different from Liniers previous Toon Book but even more wonderful! We, the privileged reader, get to watch Henrietta as she creates her very own book "The Monster with Three Heads and Two Hats". This will inspire kids to make their own comic books and make grown-ups wish they hadn't forgotten how to draw like when they were kids. Splendid!!

Great for 2nd and 3rd graders even if the pictures are slightly scary.
"A box of colored pencils is as close as you get to owning a piece of the rainbow." (pg 7) That may have been one of my favorite first lines to start a juvenile/kids book, and Written and Drawn by Henrietta by Liniers is the winner of that accomplishment. That line is the beginning of a fun story about how fun creating and writing a story can be. This graphic novel/comic would be a great resource for teachers especially for second and third graders. This Toon Book is the third one I've reviewed, and it is my favorite one as of yet.Written and Drawn by Henrietta gets 4.5 Stars in my book review. I think the story is fun, and the concept of the girl writing the story is even better. I love that the book shows the writing process, and that writing can be a lot of fun. I love the creativity the main character, Henrietta shows in writing her cute story. However, that is probably the teacher side of me coming out.The above picture shows the one qualm I have with this book. I like that the story Henrietta writes uses drawn pictures so you can tell the difference. However, I think Henrietta's illustrations are too rough and a little frightening looking. The somewhat scary pictures almost pushed me away from the story, and I am not sure I would have picked this book up on my own b/c of them. Written and Drawn by Henrietta is great, but if I were to do publish the book again I would've changed Henrietta's drawn pictures.More book reviews found at Alohamora Open a Book

The Book is just perfect. Its funny
I guess my five year old daughter would be the right person to write this review.. but since she cant write i will be in the one doing it. The Book is just perfect. Its funny, enjoyable and lovely written.Paloma (my daughter) wants me to read it to her every night before sleep and actually (sometimes) tell the story to me "reading" the drawings. Thanks for that 15 minutes Liniers... Its my favorite part of the day!
