Laser printing requires two main components: the toner which carries the "ink" to print and the imaging drum which is responsible for transferring or imprinting the toner onto the paper. The technical term for the drum is the organic photoconductor. In most laser toner cartridges, the drum and toner comes as one unit. Brother printer cartridges differ from most laser toners because the toner and drum are separate units. This is why if you have a Brother printer, you need to purchase both toner AND drum.
