Highlights from the 1970s variety series hosted by Des O'Connor. Terry-Thomas, Val Doonican, Dusty Springfield, Liberace, Jimmy Edwards, Lonnie Donegan, Sacha Distel, Sandie Shaw, Matt Monro, Roy Hudd and Harry Secombe are among the stars who join Des and his regulars Jack Douglas and Valerie Leon for the customary mix of song, sketches and conversation.

Better than people might think
Sure it's a compilation from old video from late 60's and early 70's, but the quality is quite good. It is quite difficult, even with today's technology, to get good DVD quality from old 3/4 inch video that may have not been stored properly originally. As for the shows, what people have to remember is that what may seem corny or even silly humour today, was quite funny for audiences back then. Des O'Connor was, and still is, a great performer... articulate, tight, but never took it all too seriously. His guests on the shows were always talented, and the mutual respect between O'Connor and his guests is obvious. The Jack Parnell Orchestra as always, is tight and professional, many members have passed away now, and Jack Parnell himself only passed away in August this year.(2010). RIP Jack. You will be sadly missed by anyone involved in music, and others as well.O'Connor is relaxed, with a diverse range of material, and the DVD is really a nostalgic trip back to when music was actually real, not a computer or synthesiser in sight! If other video tape of these series can be sourced it would be great for the future, because this type of history on television is fast becoming non existant. Many video tapes have long been "dumped", in fact, many great shows were even taped over on same tape, due to the high cost of video tape back in the 60's and 70's. Many master tapes of variety shows just vanished. Shame, and they are regretting it now.

Des O'Connor - Entertainer
Just a quick note to say that, contrary to the Amazon description, this isn't a chat show, and it wasn't made in the USA (though that part of the description seems to have been removed now). It's an good quality British entertainment show starring Des O'Connor. It's recorded in a TV studio, in front of a live audience, and Des performs straight songs, comedy songs, comedy routines and sketches, either alone or with a guest star. Liberace appears, as do Harry Secombe, Terry-Thomas, Dusty Springfield, and many others in this four-hour plus compilation. The humour is 40 years old now, but, if you enjoy classic British comedy, stand-up routines and Carry On humour, then this is for you. And don't forget that Des O'Connor is a fine singer who's had a successful show business career for 50 years. As for Jack Douglas, he's Comedy Great; part of entertainment history in this country, but I do speak as a Carry On fan...This is easy viewing and a lovely piece of nostalgia with guest stars at, or close to, their peak.Roll on volume 2!

TV History
If you enjoy nostalgic TV and want to watch a bit of TV history then this DVD is for you. A mixture of music, song and comedy sketches with guest Celebes appearances.Des O'connor in on tour this year (2010) and when he comes to my home town on April 8th, I hope to get to tell him after his show how much I enjoyed this DVD. And ask if there is any plans for vol 2 or even a DVD of highlights from Des's hit TV chat show Des O'connor Tonight that ran from 1977 to 2002. That would be one for the collection. I bought it for the Sandie Shaw performance
I bought this for the live performance of Wight is Wight by Sandie Shaw. The other sets are mainly of curiosity value for me. A hard-core Des O'Connor fan might think differently.

Ancient History
I have quite enjoyed Des O'Connor over the years and purchased this video as a result. I was very disappointed to discover that it is simply a re-run of some very old and corny shows. Extremely dated. It went into the charity bag.
