Q: Do these require much strength to put on, when leaving a store for example?

They aren't easy to put on, so I keep mine attached to the same pair of outdoor shoes/boots all winter so I don't have to keep doing it. If you don't want to wear them in a store, just take a pair of indoor shoes in a bag with you. They are well worth the trouble, though, as they will save you from a slip on the ice like no others can! And I've tried many, including ones much pricier. By the way, for extra security so they don't come off while walking, I strap the two sides together over the top of my foot with a long Velcro strap. One pair has lasted me several years and gotten me through the tough NH winters.

Yes, This is pair. One for each shoe, but there is no right or left. They can be put on either shoe.

Q: I wear a size 9 men's safety shoe. I plan on just dedicating a pair of shoes to these cleats. What size should I buy?

A large would fit your shoe perfectly (I wear the same size) since the frame of the cleat is rubberized and designed to stretch up to a men's size 11 or 12. This cleat is easily placed by stretching the frame from toe to heal and removal is just reversing the process. If you prefer another "easy on/easy off" cleat, I would also recommend the strap cleat that wraps around the ball of the shoe and is secured with velcro.
