It is a pretty coarse foam lilter. But as to the PPI of the foam, you would have to check with the manufacturer. I haven't seen it listed.

Q: is this safe for saltwater reef?

Sorry, I only use these foam filter inserts for my freshwater 40 gallon aquarium. As much as I would like to be scuba diving on a saltwater reef right now, I regret cannot help you, sorry.

Q: what is the minimum particle size (in micron) that the sponge can filter?

Traps large particles...detritus and such. Not designed for anything measuring in very small microns.
