can i have the microphone against right as well as left ear?

The microphone is only one side, you cannot switch it. It is actually on the right hand side

What is the latency like with these headphones, i.e. are they suitable for watching a film?

I've never used them to watch a movie but they work fine for listening to music videos on YouTube. So I think they will be fine for watching a movie.

How do you mute the mic?

There is mute button on the headset. But I swing the boom arm up and that also mutes the mic.
