I might have received a used instrument, but I don't think it was Front Line Electronic's Fault
Originally, I had planned to return the instrument due to finding another instrument that I liked more. However, there were other issues as well. I changed my review from a 2 to a 4 after speaking with a very helpful and patient representative from Front Line Electronics (Hansel), because he demonstrated a great concern for satisfaction of the customer--even one that was returning the instrument. The other issues. When I opened up the box with the accordion, I noticed a few small dents in the grill and that the straps were incredibly old and beat up. The dents weren't major, but I noticed them. I thought it could have been from travel. As for the straps, I looked back at the Amazon listing and saw that it doesn't say anything about straps (other than the hand strap for the left hand). I thought that I had just made a poor purchase, and I was planning to look more carefully at Amazon items from now on. Then I tested out all the buttons on push and pull, but there was a button which wasn't giving both voices on the pull. I sent a message to Front Line Electronics, and they said to speak with Hohner directly about it. I contacted Hohner, and I was asked for pictures of the instrument and my proof of purchase. I sent these, and I never heard from them again (or whoever their American subsidiary is that contacted me). Next I contacted a nearby accordion repairman, and the issue with the reed was easily fixed. However, while he looked at the instrument and saw the straps it came with and the dents, he pointed out some other issues like some grime on the bass side and a scratch that was there as well. (I had already requested to return it, but I was thinking, "If it really is just an issue with one stuck reed, I can live with that and cancel the return") The repairman suggested that I might have actually received a used instrument and that the previous owner kept the new straps and tossed in an old pair that he had. Due to the cost of the instrument and the evidence suggesting that I had not received a new instrument (as well as being satisfied with another instrument that I had), I decided to proceed with the return. When I spoke with Front Line Electronics about it after being notified of the restocking fee due to the straps, they were unaware that those were the straps that it came with. I hadn't contacted them about the straps (which really are ancient-looking), because I thought it was done intentionally due to the listing being tacit on straps. However after talking with Hansel, I learned that Front Line Electronics is unable to open any of the items they have (since then that would make the item become "used") and that they only sell new items. This leaves me to conclude that they were sent a used accordion. I would buy from them again due to their level of customer service, and if I had questioned the straps instead of accepting the idea "since new straps aren't mentioned in the listing, new straps aren't provided," and if the person representing Hohner had responded to my emails/calls, I probably would have kept the instrument. It's a fine accordion, and I think whoever gets it next will enjoy playing it.
