RECOMMENDATIONS FROM A MEDIUM DISTANCE RUNNER -- SIZING AND WEIGHT GUIDE --- WHAT TYPE OF ACTIVITY GUIDE
4 1/2 STARS -- MOST SHOE STRUCTURE FOR THE LIGHTEST WEIGHT I HAVE FOUND SO FAR. BUT THERE REALLY ARE SIZING ISSUES TO GET RIGHT FIRST.GENERAL COMMENTS: Ultra light for a non-bare foot style shoe. These are still my primary running shoe over other brands. That is a very personal preference oriented statement so it's impossible to say any one brand or shoe is absolute over another. I am not a marathoner, but I run 5-7 miles each go, several times a week (I mix in a little walking on rest days and use a different shoe then). I like a very light running shoe, but I don't go 100% minimalist. The heel drop is about right to still give good cushion for impact on joints. Not so high as to give unnatural can't to your form, not too low to loose shock support. If you are a taller or heavier person, these may be too light for you for any use. You need a sturdy shoe. As with many ultra-light shoes, the uppers are practically painted on to lower weight (they actually are in some areas), so you can't expect them to last as long as a regular shoe. This also limits their use mainly to running (see my activity notes below).SIZING: Unless New Balance makes a correction, don't ignore the sizing warnings on this page. Unfortunately you may even need to try more than one pair. I wear a size 10 in street shoes. I always go up half a size to 10 1/2 in running shoes to give my toes room. I had to go size 11 in this shoe to get a similar fit to the old M890v2 that these replaced for me. Once I got it right, I was happy again. I have normal to slightly narrow feet so I had no issues with a regular D width. If you have normal, but bordering on wide, you will maybe need to adjust. I recommend 1/2 to 1 full size larger than what you normally order. There is obviously no way for anyone to guarantee what you need.WEIGHT: These ran just over 9 oz in a size 11 (which is actually more like a 10 1/2 or large 10 in normal comparison). That is actually .5 oz heavier than the older version of 890v2 I had to replace. But then they have a little wear on the sole now. NB does make a significantly lighter shoe like the 1400, but it has a substantially slimmer profile and look. Padding or shock might also change, but that depends on the type of material. For me, this was an excellent balance between a light shoe and getting something that still protected my joints and looked aggressive too. As I said above, it's perhaps one of the lightest shoes you will find that still has fairly traditional structure and construction.ACTIVITIES OR USES: I only get half a year or so out of these shoes because of the light materials. If you use them in inclement weather or for harsher activities like cross fit, they are going to wear very quickly. Again, it's personal preference, but I don't suggest gym use and weight isn't a big issue if you are just walking for exercise. I use a different shoe with more durable uppers for those activities. I use an old worn pair for inclement weather. I am about 5' 7" 160lbs. I repeat what I said above. If you are taller or heavier and find you really need a sturdy shoe, these are probably not for you in any case.

Nice Shoe, But. . . .
I bought the NB shoe mainly because I needed a new pair of general running shoes, not because I was going to use them for a lot of running. That being said, they are really nicely built shoes. I did pay attention to other reviewer about the sizing issue and while I normally wear a 9.5 D (US), I ordered a 10 D, and am glad I did. The 10 D allows for just the right amount of room in the toe box for the give needed for my stride on a down hill so there is no scrunching, and still has that "it fits great" feeling while walking rather than feeling like the shoe is to big and there is a lag in the step from a too big of a shoe. The "But . . ." part of the review comes from the shoe width aspect. The reviews I read mentioned that I maybe should have gotten a 2E width rather than the standard midsize, and after wearing the shoe, perhaps I should have. The shoe fits snugly, which it okay, even while walking and even a short run, is comfortable. However, as I am a person that is getting up there in age, I find that my feet have a tendency to swell as the day goes by, and the shoe then becomes less comfortable. Normally this can be controlled just by loosening the laces, but the shoe itself is a very snug fit, so lace loosening is not necessarily the solution in the case. So my recommendation is that if you are a distance runner, or your feet swell while you run (short or long distance, or during cross training), you really need to go for a larger size shoe, not only in length but also in width. Other that the snugness aspect, the shoes are great.

890v4 very different from the 890v3
I usually run 16-20 miles a week. I am a big fan of the New Balance 890 series especially the version 3. I have 3 pairs of the 890v3's. Since I can no longer find them in my size (Women's size 8.5 D width) or the v3, I now have to buy the 890v4 online. I bought the black HKNB 890v4 (Heidi Klum New Balance edition). I went 1/2 size up to a size 9 D width hoping that they would fit especially without trying them on. I loved the HKNB style but the D width was not wide enough. It felt stiff, very narrow & tight. They did not have a Women's 2E available for purchase. So the next best thing was to shop online for the Men's 890v4. I found that the Men's 7.5 2E fit great. The width was wide enough and the toe box had enough room for my toes to expand during a run. They are very light and cushiony. Took them for a 7 mile run & 4 mile run. No issues. Just very light, comfy, no pain, great support. I will be purchasing a couple more!-If you can find them in store, try them on before purchasing online. I could not find this model in store (Specialty Running Store or Big Box Store) to try on. You may have to go a 1/2 or 1 size up depending on your preference.-The v4 is very different from the v3!! You may have been able to get away with a D width in the 890v3, but you may have to go up to a 2E or maybe a 4E in the 890v4.-READ THE REVIEWS!! This helped out so much when it came time to purchase.-Beware of a possible restocking fee if you purchase online-Finding the right size may take some trial & error.

I always buy New Balance and love the 890's They are nice and comfortable, reasonably lightweight but provide support. I have claf trouble so these help to make sure I don't over work the calf. I bought UK 10 , eu 44.5 as these fit the best, myshoes size is 9

Good and very light shoes
Good and very light shoes.I used to running in Nike's ZoomRedRocks II which are more cushioned to me regarding the road running but I have improved my running times wearing the NB shoes. The Nike's in my case aren't designed for city roads though, so improving my running times could lead to this...Any way I'm happy with this new pair of NB which are soft, light and looks good as well.

Warning on Sizing
I am, overall, very happy with these shoes - they are light, comfortable and performing well. The only proviso I have is that the sizes are very neat - I normally take a Size 10 and had to go up a full size to get a pair which fitted. Something to be aware of if you want to avoid the hassle of returns.
